* Family Historian 6 on a second device

It is, they say, bad form to start off with an apology. But I feel I should. So, sorry if my query has been asked elsewhere - I have had a look. Ok, the quickest of peeks I confess - however, I'm going away for a few days on Sunday and really want to take my family history stuff with me.

I have Family History 6 on my laptop. However, I'm not taking that with me as I find it a bit heavy these days.

I do, however, have a mini laptop - Asus, Windows 10. I would like to load Family History onto it. Unfortunately, being a wee thing, it doesn't have a cd drive.

As I have a valid copy and licence, is there any way of downloading another copy to the mini laptop? I don't mind if I have to pay again, but maybe there is a reduced fee for a second copy? I can't find any information on this. (Which, naturally, indicates there probably isn't).

Any ideas how to get over this? Would copying the entire folder and contents over via a usb stick work? Or is it a bit more complicated then that?

Any advice would be most welcome.

I'll let somebody else give you a guide to transferring data between machines, but as far as the licence goes you should be ok as you are -

An extract from the single user License Agreement for Family Historian (ƒh) Version 6.2 says:
The Software must not be installed on more than one computer at any one time, except that, subject to all other conditions, you may install it onto 2 computers (and no more than 2) if both computers are owned and kept by you, and no more than one person ever uses the software at any one time.

I think that I would download the latest version that your licence covers directly onto the Asus and install as usual, and then copy the data across via USB. [EDIT by Mike Tate: Sorry, but this technique does not work if original FH was on a CD.]

Your mini lap top may not have a CD drive but you can buy and attachment CD drive which you plug in. Your comment reminded me that I have such an attachment but haven't used it for years. May be this is no longer available due to the growth of flash drives. You should be able to add FH to a flash drive and plug it into your mini lap top

In particular, how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details says:

If you only have an Installation CD, but your new PC is a Netbook/Laptop with no CD drive, then on any PC with a CD/DVD drive, copy the entire contents of the Installation CD onto a USB memory-stick and install from that instead by running the Setup file.

and it cross-refers to the how_to:about#licence_agreement|> Licence Agreement for use on 2 PC.

That gets FH V6.2 installed, but to copy your Project data and customisations use the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide and consider synchronising the two PC via the cloud using OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.

BTW: Russell you cannot download the FH Free Trial or Latest Free Upgrade and use the CD Licence details.

You can always connect the two laptops on your home network and then share the CD drive from the main laptop to the mini laptop. You can then access your FH CD and install it that way.

I'll have a bash at copying the cd to usb and see how that goes. I do actually have an external cd drive (laptop cd drives are notorious for breaking) but it needs two usb ports to run - the mini laptop only has the one. (And it doesn't like extensions, apparently).

Copying to the USB may well not work it depends on any protection which is on the cd.

Your CD drive could be used the problem is that the CD drive requires more power than a single usb port can provide. The second plug is for additional power only not data. If you have a powered USB hub (one with its own psu) it will likely work.
