Individual Report for more than one person?

Post by E Wilcock » 15 Nov 2016 09:26

Many apologies but I cannot find out how to do what I need in order to send data to another researcher.

I want to create a single report on three people (as yet unrelated) , save it as rich text and then cut and paste the information into an email.
Please tell me which report to use for this.

The description of the two reports I select (including from the Report Finder) says it will report on individuals in the plural, not just one person. But either it will not or I am doing something wrong.
I select, move to the right hand column and highlight all three people but the report opens only for the first.

Once it has opened, there is no returning to my list, I need to go back and select all over again -

This type of report on a few selected people is something I need quite often - and I need it to come quickly and easily.

Since I have been asked to provide an example of what I want and why. Passenger lists to USA show three women immigrants mentioning John Doe in Los Angeles as the USA citizen vouching for them. I have only married names for those women. Passenger lists and USA naturalisations dont give their maiden names but may be the researchers of John Doe know who they were.

You could use any of the following reports:
  • Publish > Individual Summary Report to get a tabulated list of Facts and Citations.
  • Publish > Narrative Reports > Individual Narrative to get textual narrative and Citations.
  • Publish > Record Detail Reports > Record Detail - Individuals to get Facts similar to Property Box on All tab.
You are selecting the Individuals correctly and the Report does contain all their details.
Probably you have not noticed that there are two vertical scroll bars on the right.
The one immediately to the right of the displayed page just scrolls that page.
The one against the right-hand margin scrolls all the pages, and in the top right corner there is a Page number and left/right arrows that also navigate pages.

Use Save Report As... > Word-Processor Document (RTF) or even Text File and accept the offer to view the new file.

That is all covered in the first few pages of Chapter 17 Reports in the book Getting the Most From Family Historian as recommended in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

BTW: If you only want some of the types of Facts included, then in the first two Reports in the Options you can choose which Individual Events/Attributes to include via the List Only or Exclude List dialogues, which is an alternative to Cut & Paste on the full report afterwards.

I must be particularly stupid as I spent ages searching in that chapter of the book. I have it by the computer all the time.

I missed that outer scroll bar. And since I thought the data was only for one person, I saved it but didnt bother to open it in Word.

I have just opened it and the information is there - so I had done it right all along. Many times. I will now make another similar and this time find the scrollbar. Like so much in FH it is easy once you know how.

Yes. I saw both the scroll bars on the right and assumed the one by the document scrolled the whole document (which it did not).
I also saw the the one further right alongside all the editing options and wrongly assumed it would move to further options.
And looking again, I can now also see the numbers for 3 pages allowing one to navigate to the page one wants.

I also discovered one can copy a page (default) and paste it into a word document, but not into an email it seems. Thanks Mike

The Copy Page > ...in default formats works to a word-processor such as Word but not to plain text Email, because it is formatted text.

There are usually options in Email to format messages in Rich Text or HTML that will accept the copy.

Just to close the loop with Chapter 17 Reports, in the FH V5 copy, the first page has Steps to look at a Family Group Sheet and step 4. mentions the two vertical scroll-bars:
"The Reports Window has a grey side panel to the right of the report area, and two vertical scrollbars. One of these is just to the left of the side panel. The other is on the right side of the side panel. Family Historian can display two pages side-by-side, but it never displays more than one page vertically. The leftmost of the two vertical scrollbars allows you to scroll up and down within the current page (or two pages if you're showing two). The rightmost scrollbar also scrolls up and down within the current page, but will scroll across pages too. Click on this 'outer' scrollbar now to browse down through the entire report."
Three pages further on it describes the The Reports Window Side Panel where the Page navigation is mentioned.

I must have a more investigative mentality. If I see two scroll bars, I will scroll them to see what happens rather than make assumptions. Likewise with buttons, I will experiment to see what they do, and if necessary read the manual.

BTW: With the Report displayed, tap the F1 keyboard key to open a related Help page (this works for most displays).
That describes some useful features you may be unaware of. For example, if you want to change the Individuals included in the Report use the Records... button on right, or if you want to see a Property Box use the Page Records section.

Thanks for that additional information.
Irony is that my email is set to plain text only because plain text is required by Roots Web genealogy mailing lists.
