Marking unsure relatives in the tree

Post by Klaus Yde » 04 Oct 2016 17:33

I am building a new tree of my relatives. Some of them I am not sure exist. Is there some easy way to mark them in the tree (color coding?) so I easily can see which have been verified and which have not?

Of course I can see it by the sources - but they are not seen in tree.

I had hoped it was possible for example to mark all suspect with a red border, red dot or??

Kind regards

PS A more easy way than: Diagram Box Colours based on Flags which seems somewhat longhaired ;)

One possibility.
On your diagram Options > Boxes Tab
create a condition and "Edit Features"

attached is an example with a couple of conditions. (Diagram + Text Scheme)

It might mean you have to create a regular scenario for the condition, perhaps surety, or that there is no source.

Hi Klaus,
You did not say whether you wanted the "easy way to mark them in the tree" to be manual or automatic.

The manual method is to select the Diagram Boxes of the unverified Individuals then right-click and choose Format where you can select any Box Features you like. To preserve that setting you must Save Diagram as a Chart and view it via View > Save Charts. You can later revise the Format for selected Individuals and Save Diagram again.

The automatic method is to use Diagram > Options > Boxes > Add Condition > Expression where the Expression defines your criteria for unverified Individuals, e.g. No BMD Source Citations. So you need to tell us what criteria you want to use, and we can advise on the Expression to use. See how_to:understanding_expressions|> Understanding Expressions.

Se related thread Diagram Box Colours based on Flags (14233) that eventually develops into almost exactly the same requirement as yours.

Thanks for the answers. As I understand it - the easy way only works in a saved diagram. That is easy but not very useful. What I looked for was a marking of records that showed up every time at unsure relative was in a diagram and as i understand it it has to be the other not very easy solution for beginners ;-). I had hoped that someone has made a plugin that solved that problem ;-).

I must read the book again and test and test and test.............. sigh

Kind regards

Hi Klaus.
Why do you say a saved diagram is not very useful?
I am NOT talking about a Diagram saved as an external PDF/JPEG file.
I am talking about a Saved FH Chart which is just as dynamic as a Diagram, but saves the Box Features, the Diagram Root, and various other settings. It will automatically update for any new Fact data or any new Individuals added to the tree. So in many respects it is even more useful than a Diagram which always starts from default settings.

A Saved Chart does exactly what you asked for, by offering an easy way of marking each Individual Box that shows up every time you open the Diagram Chart. You create a new Chart by using the Diagram > Save Diagram command. You open a Chart by using the View > Saved Charts command. If you alter a Chart, perhaps by changing which Boxes are marked, then it always prompts for the changes to be saved back into the same Chart.

Otherwise, because Working Diagrams are created afresh each time, the only place to mark Individual records is in their data, either by adding a Flag or by detecting their lack of Facts, which as you say is not a very easy solution for beginners.

Hi Mike

Thanks a lot. I had the impression that saved diagrams / charts was static. So that helps a lot. I read also about using icons. I think I have usable solution now

Kind regards
