Descriptive Report on Enlistment 1st WW

Hello all,

I have just found this document relating to my ancestor online and I have noticed that it provides quite a lot of accurate information, birth dates of children and an accurate wedding date. However, I am unsure the best way of entering this info.....can I enter the information via auto source citation or is this just for birth, marriage death certs etc? I just want all the info to be put in the correct records as automatically as possible and store the media document in the correct place.

Do anyone have any ideas on this please?

I apologise in advance if this is something I should already know.

Create a source for the document and (if you can) attach an offline copy (as media) for safety with details about where it came from and copyright restrictions.

Use Automatic Source Citation to select this new source and then enable it. Create all the facts you need and your new source will be cited. Then disable automatic source citation.

(The purist in me says you should check all the claims in the document before creating the facts, however).

To flesh out Helen's reply, here are a few more pointers.

Create a Source Record for the Enlistment document in much the same way you create one for a Birth/Death Cetificate. Although, if you use Ancestral Sources you may never have created a Source Record yourself. If that is the case, then ask for more detailed advice here.

Decide what facts you plan to add, that are confirmed by that document.

Enable Automatic source citations as Helen says, and for each fact that you add, that new Source Record will be automatically cited. Essentially, that is all that Automatic source citations will do, although it does have some feature to help you create a Source Record in the first place.

I recommend the same method as Helen. If any of the facts already exist in your records (e.g. you may already have a marriage date, or birth dates for the children) you may want to add the new Source record as an additional source for the existing facts. Select the existing fact and click Add Citation in the source pane, then select the new Source.

Military service records are sometimes a source of all sorts of information you might never find elsewhere. For example some include details of the person's height, chest measurement, hair and eye colour and even what tattoos they had (and where)! I record these details in the standard Physical Description fact.
