Dual Monitor Issue

Post by DavidNewton » 01 Sep 2016 09:18

Until yesterday my display system consisted of a pair of identical monitors with 1920x1080 resolution and text size set to 125%. Then one of the monitors began to suffer various problems so I took it out and replaced it with an old monitor at 1680x1050 resolution with text size at 100% (actual screen was larger so text was easy to read).

No problem with FH until I switched the main display screen of FH from the higher resolution monitor to the lower resolution. Initially it semed fine but attempting to switch tabs in the property box gave a strange split screen mode (within the property box) with a stripe of the new tab and the rest still the main tab

After a bit of playing around I discovered that the problem was resolved by setting both monitors to the same text size. I simply report this in case anyone else has a similar problem.

I presume you tried all the usual tricks of closing and reopening FH, and restarting PC, etc.

Hi Mike

Yes I did all that and the issue came up every time. FH worked fine on the high resolution monitor but not the lower which gave me the clue to check the monitor settings.

However, more playing, because I did not like the two screens at the same setting, has allowed me to find a better (for me) solution and that is to set the low resolution screen as the main screen. The splash screen seems to always load into the main screen even when FH loads into the secondary screen so I thought this might be relevant.

Now I am happy to say that I can use both monitors with my preferred text size settings and FH works fine in either screen.

It seems I was too optimistic. The problem has not gone away it has changed. Instead of a wide area of screen on the right as in the screenshot in the opening post, the static area now is the size of the source box, and flicking the source box on and off clears (I normally do not show the source box in a docked property box) This problem is still specific to the low resolution screen. I guess that until I get my high res monitor fixed I will have to use FH in the one screen only.

David

Added in Edit: my comment about turning the source box on and off clears is not exactly correct. It clears the right side but not the bottom.

Why beginning to feel that this is a graphics driver problem (Windows 10 mandatory update maybe?) Should have stayed with Windows 8.1 (or 7)

David, have you installed a driver for the 'old' monitor, or just plugged it in and hoped for the best?

Does the manufacturer's website say anything about Windows 10 compatibility?

Hi Mike

nvidia control panel did recognise my monitor so not a problem. However, about two weeks ago windows 10 updated the nvidia driver on my machine. I have now rolled back the driver and also prevented Windows 10 from automatically updating device drivers. So far that seems to have solved the problem completely. But after my last pronouncement on this let's say...for now
