Gedcom and imported media files
I recently needed to extract a number of records from my "all family" project project to send to someone else interested in one of the surnames I'm researching. I also wanted to send any related images associated with either the individuals or associated sources. I did look at the split tree helper, but found the process quite confusing, and the KB article seems to be rather out-of-date? The simplest method I discovered, one that captured all of the individuals I needed to extract, was to extract the individuals to a GEDCOM file using a simple query and use the new GEDCOM to create a new project. This worked just as I had expected with one exception, the media files were all put into the Media folder totally ignoring the folder structure they were copied from. I just wondered if I'd missed something when doing the import, or if this action is by design?

Re: Gedcom and imported media files
Yes, File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File is the most effective way to create a subset-Project.
The process is described in how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with Multimedia and for FH V6 should retain the Media structure by default, but if not then follow the advice for FH V5 or earlier as summarised below.
[EDIT: I have just checked FH V6.2 and it does NOT retain the Media structure by default, whereas I thought earlier V6 did
so I have updated the KB advice and added some other details.]
The trick to retaining the Media structure is to export the Gedcom file to the same folder as the original Gedcom, instead of the default Public folder.
i.e. The exported Gedcom must sit alongside the Media folder holding the structure.
See how_to:v4:understanding_projects|> Understanding Projects and follow the Tips for New & Upgrading Users link at the bottom of the Project Window, and subsequently the Notes for Upgrading Users link at the bottom of the Family Historian Help window, and review I have my own system for organising multimedia files. If I create a new project and let Family Historian copy my multimedia files into the new project folder, will it just copy them all into one subfolder?.
Does the person receiving the Gedcom use FH, or some other genealogy product?
If they are NOT using FH then see the Export to Another Person or Program section in how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with Multimedia.
