Birth Informant is showing Death Citation

Post by David Potter » 16 Aug 2016 19:12

Hi Forum

I need help understanding this one...

I have a Father who 'Informed on the Birth of his Son. So the event is shown as a Witnessed Fact. This fact is showing two Citations; 1 for Birth of the Son, and another for the Death of the Son. Both Citations are valid for the Son only as they both support the Birth Date and Place. But I don't understand why this Death Citation is attached to the 'Informed on the Birth' Fact for the Father? If I open the Witness list for this same Fact and click on the Father, only the Birth Citation is displayed. Similarly if I click on the Registrar of the Birth, again only the Birth Citation is displayed.

So why does this Fact 'Informed the Birth of' show both Citations when the Death Citation is only applicable to the Son and not this Fact for the Father?

Furthermore - if I delete the Death Citation from the Fact - Informed on the Birth of'; it also deletes the Citation from the Sons Birth record!

I'm not understanding this behaviour at all.... I have attached some screen shots to help describe this...

Please Help.

Kind Regards

David

Hi Forum

Supporting Information:

If I run the Plugin - List All Citations for a Source. The Death Citation is only registered to the Son and the Witnesses for the Death. Nothing can be seen to link this Death Citation to the Father?

David,

Have you had a look at the "Witnesses Dialog" Section of the Family Historian Help File? That explains the process including what feeds through to the Witnesses' Property Box.

Hi Mervyn, I read through the help for Witness and it still does not explain why I see the Death Citation for what is clearly a Witness role for Informing on a Birth event. Perhaps you could screen shot where that explanation is as I can't see it clearly.

Many Thanks

David

The Source Citations for a Fact with Witnesses apply to the Primary Fact and to each equivalent Witness Fact. Your misunderstanding is that they are somehow linked to the people, when they are actually liked to the fact, but I can see how that is an easy mistake.

So both the Birth and Death citations will appear against the primary Birth Event and both Informant Witness and Registrar Witness facts, because they are all tied to the primary Birth Event.

Any Source Citations attached to the Witnesses themselves are proof of their relationship to the primary fact.

Hi Mike

Thanks again - a very clear explanation. Got It now. But it did for sure throw me when I saw it.

David,

This is the extract from the FH Help File that I meant:

"If a person is a Witness in someone else's event (e.g. a bridesmaid at someone's marriage), the fact that they were a Witness at that event will be mentioned in the Property Box when you view the list of facts about them in the Facts tab, Also, in narrative reports, events in which they had a role as a Witness will be mentioned."

But Mervyn that does not say anything about how Source Citations on the Fact and on the Witness are presented, which was David's query.
