I have just found that a son and father in my data are one and the same person! How do I get rid of the father who has 2 sons, one of them the same person as the father, in order to take away that generation and make the right son and his brother sons instead of grandsons of the offending persons father? If I try to delete the offending person the whole tree below is also deleted.
How do I delete the father without affecting the records lower down?

Re: Deleting a generation
I suspect the simplest method is to merge the father's record into the son's record.

Re: Deleting a generation
When you delete a record it will break the tree links, but does not actually delete the sub-tree.
The sub-tree is simply no longer linked to the rest of your family tree.
It would help if you posted a family tree, but I assume it is something like: Are you are saying Father and Son2 are the same person?
You say there is a descendant tree, so is Gson1 = Son1 and Gson2 his brother?
Until it is clear what relationships you want to adjust, it is difficult to advise in any detail.
BTW: David says Merge the Father & Son, but that is NOT allowed while still linked in a family relationship.
Before doing anything take a File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup.
The technique to resolve this type of problem is to unlink the Son2 so that his sub-tree is distinct.
But make a note of their Record Id before you start.
Then you can Edit > Merge/Compare the records Father and Son2.
BUT you will also need to Merge the Family records and maybe Son1 with Gson1?
The benefit of Merge over Delete is that all the Facts, Media, Source Citations, etc, are retained.
BUT as I said, until it is clear what records need merging do not do any experiments.
