Family Historian User Group

I attempted to open FH, today, and an AVG (anti-virus software) window popped up saying a threat had been removed and FH did not open.
I attempted to open FH, again, and received error msg "Error in installation. Please re-install."

I looked in the virus vault and found:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Program\Fh.exe Deleted/moved to virus vault File or Directory

C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Program\Fh.exe Object was blocked Process

Found registry key with reference to infected file C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Program\Fh.exe
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\App Paths\fh.exe\\

What do I do now? As you will see from my previous posts, I am a technophobe. (I haven't looked yet, but I doubt I have the key from my installation of FH, which was an upgrade from the previous version.)
I'm running latest version of FH on WIN 7 on a PC.

Licence Key Problem.

I am sorry to say you have not learnt the lesson from computer crash (12927) where you had to get your wife to go cap in hand to Calico Pie Support to download your installation file and the V5 & V6 licence keys again.

I advised you to make a how_to:family_historian_installation_details#installation_archive|> Installation Archive to avoid future loss of such a valuable resource, but you seem to be saying you did not do that, and have lost the licence keys again!

So if you cannot find the installation file and both licence keys, you will have to ask your wife to repeat the exercise with Calico Pie Support as per how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems, and this time create an INSTALLATION ARCHIVE.

Virus Problem.

I very much doubt that the AVG reported threat is valid, and is therefore a false positive, and can be ignored.

The solution is to exclude the FH installation folder from the AVG virus scan as follows:

1. Launch AVG user interface, then click "Tools" and "Advanced Settings."
2. Click "Resident Shield" on the left side of the window, then click "Exceptions" and "Add Path".
3. Select the C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Program folder you want AVG to ignore.
4. Click "OK" to save your changes.

Then re-install FH using the download and both V5 & V6 licence keys.
Finally upgrade to the latest free FH V6.2.2 from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade.

As to the installation:
Thank you for gently chastising me about saving keys. In fact, I DID LEARN FROM YOU, last time and I kept the keys written, in longhand, on paper. By far, the safest way to store anything.
It seems I must now uninstall FH. Then install FH5, from a CD I made. Then install FH6 from the website. Then install FH6.2 as an additional download. (I don't need to run the FH4 CD, which is the original I purchased) Am I correct, so far?

Then, miraculously, somehow, all of my family tree information and photos will join up and my new version of FH will be fully populated with my family. Is that correct?

I guess, alternatively, I could buy a new FH6 disc for £40 and just run the 6.2 upgrade, saving hassle. Then, miraculously....etc.

As to the virus:
What you are suggesting is that, in the future, AVG will no longer scan FH which means I won't face this problem again. It doesn't mean that, somehow, I am resurrecting my previous FH from the virus vault and continuing on, as if nothing had happened. Is that correct?

Just ask support at calico to send you a new link to V6 and the licence details for both programs. You can then just install the upgrade.

Personally I keep all my licence codes etc in a spreadsheet which is in my Documents folder which is backed up all the time. That way I can just cut and paste as needed.

It is better to save the licence keys on disk (as well as paper) then you can Copy & Paste the keys into the FH installation dialogue. You must also save the V6 installation file.

You should NOT need to uninstall FH.

NO, do NOT install any V4 or V5 CD as they are redundant.

Just install the V5 to V6 Upgrade installation file from Calico Pie that you downloaded before via their Email link, and should be in your Installation Archive. You cannot use any of the current website downloads. It must be the one that came with the Email licence key.
The FH installation dialogue will ask for both your V5 and V6 licence keys.
(So it is just a single installation and no need to buy another V6 licence.)

Finally upgrade to the latest free FH V6.2.2 from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade.

Yes, once FH is running it will find your Project data assuming it is located in the default ...\Documents\Family Historian Projects folder.

As far as AVG and virus is concerned, you are correct.

I am trying, I think, to follow your instructions. I have tried to download the free v6 and I have also, tried to download v5 from the website's archives. I have NOT uninstalled FH before trying these.
In both cases, I receive the attached error msg.
Suggestions?

You cannot install the free v6.2.2 until you have installed your purchased licenced v6 download.
Did you read what it says on that latest free download webpage?
It says it is only valid for licenced V6 installations....

You MUST use the downloaded installation file that came with the Email your wife got from Calico Pie following your computer crash last October when you had lost the original purchased download.

If you have lost it again, because you did not create an Installation Archive, then your wife must ask for it again, but this time create an archive! Please!

You cannot use any of the current online downloads. They will not recognise your licence keys.

After attempting the free download, I attempted the download included in the email to my wife from Feb 15. An error message said that had expired.
I then contacted Calico Pie and they sent me a different link to a free download and that installed v6.2.2, without need to use the key. So I'm off and running.
I have a problem with number of pictures now showing on a newly created website but I will post that separately, with an earlier inquiry I made on the same topic.

Please, please, make an Installation Archive comprising that latest downloaded V6.2.2 installation file and both V5 and V6 licence details, and make a backup of that archive, so you do not have to ask Calico Pie for it again. I do that, too, and also email myself a copy of the info via Gmail. That way it's in the cloud as well - searchable, cut-and-paste-able, etc.

Yes, those are useful techniques, but the downloaded installation file (FH, et al) must also be preserved and won't fit in a spreadsheet. Without that installation file the licence keys are not much use. You would still need to ask Calico Pie for another download.

So I preserve the original Emails from Calico Pie with the downloaded installation file in an archive folder that forms part of my standard backups.
