Census Data references

I am trying to customise a Property Box tab to show the notes part of a census tag and cannot quite get it together.
something like INDI.CENS[year=1841].NOTE[1]>TEXT% which does not work. I want to use the notes field to show recorded place of birth, rather than make a new alt birth field. Can anyone help please?
in anticipation

Marlene,
Not sure if it is what you are looking for, but I have a census tab that lists date and place for up to 10 census facts. To show the note for the first I use the following:
%INDI.CENS[1].NOTE2[1]%
For the second I use:
%INDI.CENS[2].NOTE2[1]%
etc.

Thank you Bill. That is it exactly. Can you easily explain to me why it is NOTE2? I am just a beginner at the data references but can see that I will use them a lot to customise my property box tabs

Marlene,
I'm glad that worked for you. I'm not really that good with expressions and references, but this is how Mike (Tatewise) explained it to another person in another posting.
"In Gedcom both Note Records and Local Notes use the NOTE tag, but the former have an @N99@ link value while latter have plain text. In FH Data Reference format the tags NOTE and NOTE2 are used to make the distinction clearer. BTW: The same convention is used for Source Records (SOUR) versus Source Notes (SOUR2) and Media Records (OBJE) versus Local Media (OBJE2) although you are less likely to have come across those."

Marlene, you can use the same concept but with a year index:
%INDI.CENS[year=1841].NOTE2[1]%
However, these custom tab year index [year=yyyy] entries are read-only, and the data must be entered via the Facts tab.
Whereas, the instance index [n] entries on a custom tab are read and write.
When creating these Data References it is often useful to click the << Select button and use the Data Reference Assistant.
In this case select Individual + Events + Census and there will be listed both Note Record>> and Note.
As Bill explained, Note Record>> is a link to a separate shared Note record that would be listed under the Notes tab of the Records Window, and can only be linked to a Fact via the All tab.
Also as Bill explained, Note refers to the local Note box shown for each Fact on the Facts tab, which is where you plan to record the alternative Birth details.

That has been very useful - thank you. I am addicted to making my screens just so and although I was using the Data Reference Assistant I was getting the 'linked to other' errors and couldn't quite get there. Thank you again - I will continue fiddling.
