MS Word from RTF, pictures cannot be embedded

Post by RBH425 » 12 Jul 2016 22:45

I exported a narrative report in RTF, opened it in Word 2016.
The pictures appear to be within tables. I cannot seem to format them as pictures. I want to embed them within the text. The edit pictures option is grayed out.

I can move the pics next to each other, just not within the text.
Any ideas on how to format the pics?

Thank you,
Robin

Robin

This is just normal editing in MS Word. You can always edit the table by adding additional columns and then moving the photos into the different table elements. Alternatively you can use the usual copy and paste commands.

Even though they are embedded in tables (to format into rows and columns), the individual images can be selected and Cut & Pasted as usual. Just be sure to select one picture, and not the table.

There is one 'gotcha' that makes positioning the pictures tricky. Their picture position text wrapping mode is set to In line with text which locks the picture in-between characters as if it were a large character that moves with the text. It must be changed to Square or Tight to allow text to wrap around the picture, by using the Format tab Text Wrapping options.

Even while embedded within the table, if you select the picture and open the Format tab, all the Picture Tools are available.

BTW: I am using MS Word 2007, but I suspect Word 2016 will be very similar.

Thank you Mike, a bit tricky separating the picture from the table. I am used to right clicking and formatting, but for some reason I have to use the actual format tab. Yesterday that tab was grayed out, probably because I was not isolating the actual picture from the table. Today, it works!

Interestingly the narrative data within Word uses a lot of tables. I use the "square" text wrap and the pictures will not wrap around multiple tables. I might have a short narrative about a person, with (2) pics. And then below is the marriage, and list of children.
The pics will not wrap/square within the text of the children. The pic stays to the right side, and the list of children moves downward.

Master Genealogist did a direct output to Word, so avoided the use of tables. I am not used to the "table tools" and will play around with these a bit.

Thank you for your help!

Aha! Under format for the table is an option to change the layout to text.
When I highlight the table, the option to convert to text is on the far right side. The table has to be highlighted/chosen. I have to do one table at a time, but that is okay because not every individual has pictures and/or multiple pictures.

Not sure if this is in Word 2007, but a handy tool!

It depends where you anchor the picture. When the picture is selected the anchor appears as an anchor icon.

If the anchor is outside the table, then yes the table will NOT wrap around the picture.

But place the anchor against the table cell with the italic text for a specific child, and that text will wrap around the picture as normal, and if necessary the row will expand to accommodate the picture.

Yes, you can convert any table to text, but its layout will not exactly mimic the table, so will look different from those that remain as tables.
