Pdf file output is not enabled
Hi,
I am getting the "Pdf file output is not enabled" message whenever I try to save a diagram as a pdf or try to print. I have been through the various solutions including uninstalling the Nova printer and then downloading the latest version 6.2. Still gives me the same message. My list of installed programs though makes no mention of the Nova printer. Just says Family Historian 6.2.
Any thoughts

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
So I guess you are following the advice in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems#save_as_pdf_file_does_not_work|> Save As PDF File Does Not Work.
You have used Programs and Features to uninstall the FH PDF Nova printer.
Downloading FH V6.2 is insufficient - you must actually install it.
It might also be necessary to uninstall FH and reinstall from scratch, using your licence key, using the techniques given at top of that KB page such as Run as Administrator.

Hi,
Sorry, I didn't explain that - I did install FH 6.2 and it is working as normal, if not a bit better and faster than before, but the problem with the Pdf saving/printing persists.

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Hi Jamie,
Did you try my suggestion to uninstall FH and then install FH from scratch using Run as administrator as explained at the top of how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems?
I suspect you are logged in to an Administrator account, but that sometimes is not enough, and you must use the right-click technique. You may also need to disable anti-virus and install in Safe Mode.
Until you can get the Family Historian PDF (novaPDF 7.7 printer) to install with FH the Save as PDF options will never work.
BTW: What Windows OS are you using? (7, 8.1, 10 or are you using Crossover)

Okay, I'll have a go at that. I am at work at the moment and will get back to you as to how it goes. I am using Windows 8.1.
Many thanks

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Another cause of this could be the printer spooler not running. There is a known bug in Windows, where the print spooler does not always start after shutdown or hibernation.
Check that Windows printer 'spooler' is running by opening your list of printers in 'Printers & Devices', (opened from control panel) then right-click and select diagnose/troubleshoot. It will tell you if it wasn't running, and will start it for you.
I had a similar problem generating PDF diagrams, and print spooler not running was the cause!
Just a suggestion, hope it helps.

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Thanks Mke, that is mentioned in the KB, but Jamie says that Family Historian PDF (novaPDF 7.7 printer) is not listed as installed in Programs and Features, so until that is overcome nothing else will help.

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Mike,
In his original post, Jamie stated that after failing to print he tried re-installing the Nova printer, which to me says he saw the printer, tried to print to it but it didn't work, so he tried re-installing it. When he talked about Nova Printer being missing, he was talking about a program being missing, not the printer.
My thinking is that it was installed but not working properly, hence my suggestion about non-running spooler.

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I have uninstalled the old FH and am trying now to download from scratch the latest version of FH but can only find version 6, not 6.2.2. All my data is saved on a memory stick and I am praying it will neatly fit back on to the new FH when I eventually find it. I still have the licence key. Do I just download Version 6 and then upgrade?

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Follow the advice in how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details.
If you bought FH V6 on CD then install that CD with its licence key.
If bought online from Calico Pie then install the downloaded installation file that you should have carefully preserved in an Installation Archive along with its licence key.
If you have lost the download, then see how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems to get it sent again.
Eventually, download and install the latest free upgrade to FH V6.2.2 from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade as usual.
Create an Installation Archive as advised in how_to:family_historian_installation_details#installation_archive|> Family Historian Installation Archive.
All your FH data on your hard disk should be automatically adopted unless you have changed the default ...\Documents\Family Historian Projects folder Location. That data does not get removed when you uninstall FH.

Re: Pdf file output is not enabled
Hi,
Well I have got it working, but not in a very sensible way. I downloaded the free 30 day trial. I still have my licence key but I can't find the installation file. What I will do is uninstall the free trial, get Calico Pie to send a new installation file and take it from there. But the 30 day free trial allows me to save as a Pdf so I should be able to get it working. Thanks for your help. I'll try it out in the next few days and get back to you if I have problems.

If it's only the Nova that's not working try installing the following
http://www.family-historian.co.uk/wp-co ... pdf7.7.exe
