Custom Report Narrative
Recent convert from TMG.. still trying to get the hang of Family Historian. I am going through the videos, help items, and these forums.
The Journal Narrative report was my go to report from TMG. I export to Word, do some editing, and produce books. With 13,000 people in the genealogy, it can be overwhelming.
In TMG I could choose a focus person, and do a report on the descendants. But TMG did not include everyone, only straight line descendants.
I would like to create a descendant narrative report from my focus person, with a list of specific individuals included in the report. The query function does not seem to work well for me. So, I am trying to pick/choose the people I want to include. Time consuming, but this will work well for me .. if I can save the records chosen.
I have created a custom report. Is there a way to save the chosen records (individuals), without having to pick/choose each time I open the report?
Also this sentence thing is driving me nuts. I do not want sentences with some items, is there a way to delete them? So, far I have found a way to edit.. but not delete.
thank you,
Robin

Re: Custom Report Narrative
One more question. TMG has back reference generations within its narrative reports, is this possible w/ Family Historian? Really liked this feature, being able to see the prior ancestor individuals going back to the focus person.

Re: Custom Report Narrative
To save a list of Individuals use a Named List then when selecting records for a Report use the Named Lists tab.
You can use Save Report As > Word-Processor Document (RTF) and edit it in Word.
Have you also investigated the Publish > Books option?
There are at least two ways to exclude Fact Sentences from narrative Reports.
1) In Report > Options > Main tab, under Individual Events/Attributes top right you can choose to create a List Only or Exclude List of Fact Types you want included or excluded. This will include/exclude all Facts that match the list.
2) Define the Sentence Template as {blank}. If this is used in the Fact Definition then that Fact Type will always be omitted from all narrative Reports. If used in an individual Fact Sentence field, then just that specific Fact will be omitted.
Sorry, but I do not understand what you mean by back reference generations, prior ancestor individuals going back to the focus person. Do you mean ancestors of the Focus person, or descendants of the Focus person, or what? Have you tried all four standard Diagram types?

Re: Custom Report Narrative
Thank you Mike, {blank} is excellent!
Will try those other ideas.
Here is what I get from TMG narrative report:
Caleb5 Balch (Caleb4, John3, Benjamin2, John1)
Listing the ancestors back to the root person, great way for people to reference their lineage

Re: Custom Report Narrative
Sorry, still do not understand, because I do not know the relationship between the persons you listed. Please use their relationship to Focus person: Focus, son, grandson, greadgrandson, etc or Focus, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, etc.

Re: Custom Report Narrative
Focus person John1
each of the other people are his descendant in line with the person in the report
Caleb5 Balch (Caleb4, John3, Benjamin2, John1)
John1 - first person in genealogy (the 1 denotes first generation)
Benjamin2 - son of John1 (second generation)
John3 - son of Benjamin2 (third generation)
Caleb4 - son of John3 (fourth generation)
Caleb5 - son of Caleb4 (fifth generation)
Thank you, sorry for the confusion

Re: Custom Report Narrative
OK, understood.
The nearest standard Report in FH is the Publish > Narrative Reports > Ancestors by Generation with in your example Caleb5 Balch as the Root person, but it will include all Ancestor lines not just the specific line to Focus person John1.
FH does have an indirect method of creating such a Report.
Select the Root person Caleb5 and Use Tools > How Related.
It will automatically choose Root person Caleb5 and Focus person John1.
If all you want is a summary of the relationship then click View Report.
Otherwise, click Display Graphically and Hide Spouses & Siblings.
The resulting Diagram may give you enough, but if not then continue...
Use Diagram > Family Connection Mapper and cog Menu > Select Route Boxes.
Now in main toolbar use Edit > Add to Named List.
Finally use Publish > Narrative Reports > Individual Narrative and on Named Lists tab select the list populated above.
Although that is somewhat indirect, it does work for any relatives, not just direct line ancestors, and you can keep an unlimited set of Named Lists for future use.

Re: Custom Report Narrative
Is there a code for the "parents of descendants" feature?
