Diagrams & public information

Post by jbrooks » 18 Jun 2016 16:18

I have created a text scheme for a diagram in V6.2.2 using "all events and attributes" and would also like to include the "public information field", which is where I have recorded the source record reference from the record office.

Is this possible and how would I achieve this.

Thank you.

The All Events and Attributes text scheme has very limited customisation options.

I presume you are talking about the Publication Information field of Source records.

You can list that field for all Source Citations linked directly to the Individual record by adding a <Custom Item...> and using the Template code:
Pub.Info: %INDI.SOUR[1+]>PUBL%

It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to add that field for Source Citations linked to all Facts, but would be possible for a specific subset.

BTW: The technique for determining Template codes is to click the <<Insert button and use the Data Ref Assistant dialogue.

Hi Mike,

In response to do I understand (from other posts); "yes a bit". Guess I am trying to walk before I can crawl although finding it useful to try stuff with FH. So far it has has met my requirements as I am trying to transfer written info into the program. I am struggling to understand the overall data structure as this is a very easy to use application and at the same time very feature rich through more complex functionality.

I have been through youtube for FH although have not found a "data structure" tutorial; any pointers appreciated. Reading "getting the most from family historian 6" repeatedly.

My aim is to consolidate, document in FH and verify data collected to date before proceeding with my research. I have used reports although find everything in one place on a diagram very powerful. My thinking was to use the "all events" and add custom to fill in the "gaps".

Your help and others on the forum is very much appreciated.

So I have tried to add "public information" from source record and struggling to understand why it is not working. I have attached a screen shot and help would be appreciated.

My response is the same as in Diagrams and linked media file names (13898).

You cannot use the All Events and Attributes scheme and customise the gaps. That text scheme is simply not designed to allow you to achieve what you want.

If you insist on using Diagrams then you should start with one of the other text schemes that list several types of fact. You will have to customise each and every fact to display its Media and Sources, etc. Then add similar items for each fact that you use such as Birth, Baptism, brought into congregation, Residence, Occupation, Census, Overseer of the poor, Marriage, Death, Burial, Probate, etc, etc. However, be aware that these will NOT be listed in date order, but grouped by each fact type.

Regarding data structure, how much detail do you want? FH is built directly on the GEDCOM specification as defined in fhugdownloads:contents:gedcom_standard_release_5.5|> Utility ~ GEDCOM Standard Release 5.5. There is a summary data structure diagram in Tools > Plugins > More > How to Write Plugins help pages. But you have identified a gap in our Knowledge Base that I will rectify as soon as possible.

I have added a glossary:formal_database_structure|> Formal Database Structure definition to provide a formal context for many other existing glossary:index|> Glossary of Terms entries that were not inter-related.
