Diagrams and linked media file names

Post by jbrooks » 18 Jun 2016 15:54

I have created a text scheme for a diagram in V6.2.2 using "all events and attributes" and would also like to include the filename of linked media.

Is this possible and how would I achieve this.

Thank you.

The All Events and Attributes text scheme has very limited customisation options.

However, you can list the filenames of all Media linked directly to the Media tab of the Individual by adding a <Custom Item...> and using the Template code:
%INDI.OBJE[1+]>_FILE%

It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to add the filenames of Media linked to all Facts or all Source Citations, but would be possible for a specific subset.

BTW: The technique for determining Template codes is to click the <<Insert button and use the Data Ref Assistant dialogue.

Hi Mike,

It does not display the file names on the drawing.

Thank you Jonathan

I have deleted those image postings as they are not relevant.

Do you understand what I said in my first reply?

Presumably you have NO Media linked to the Media tab of the Individual record.

Hi Mike,

I thought I had media linked to the individual as per screen shot or may be I am mistaken. Screen shot of all records attached and linked media.

Now I am confused and appreciate your help with this.

So, for Rebecca, double-click her Diagram box to open her Property Box () and click its Media tab. There is Media for the Rebecca BD DC.jpg image.

Your Records Window screenshot shows a Baptism Fact with Media attached.
To show that needs Template code %INDI.BAPM[1].OBJE[1+]>_FILE%
But that only works for Baptism (BAPM) fact Media.
To show for all facts you would need to add a Template Item for every type of fact.

BTW: Why do you want to show Media filenames on Diagrams? It is very unusual.

Hi Mike,

I would like to add media files so that I can verify my data on a diagram including linked files.

Thank you Jonathan.

To verify all your data will require much more than just Media filenames.
What exactly do you mean by 'verify your data' anyway?

The Diagram approach you are attempting cannot associate Media and Sources with each separate Fact, unless you use a Text Scheme that defines each and every Fact separately.
As I said to start with, the All Events and Attributes text scheme is highly preconfigured and has very limited customisation options, so is unsuitable for what you need.

I suggest you verify your data by other methods.
  • Inspect the Property Box of each Individual.
  • Perhaps produce a Fact Query, but even that is complex if you have many multiple Media or Sources for each Fact.
  • A Report is probably the best bet, as that can include all the details you wish to verify.
