* Census images how to link correctly to families

I am a new user of Family Historian.
I would like to learn the correct way please to link a census image to members of a family group. I have tried a few ways but neither successful as I have either duplicated an individuals link or missed it linking. With an individual record I would like to see in the property box, under fact tab, the fact eg census with the media symbol beside it . Then when I click on the media tab I would like to see the image page here and have the option to click 'show face' to see only the focus, family's details.

Ancestral Sources is what you need. It takes care of all this for you.

As an alternative to Ancestral Sources, you can easily do it youself.

1. Create a new Source record. Mine look like this.

2. On the Media tab, click Add Media and then Insert from File to attach your image to the Source Record.

3. On each family member, go to the Facts tab, click Add Fact, then Census.

4. Enter the Date, Place, etc then (at the bottom) click Add Citation.

5. From the popup list, select the Source record that you created at Step 1.

As a newcomer I strongly advise you spend some time with how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers especially the Documentation & Tutorials and Sources Methods 1 & 2.

The suggestions that Colin and Roger have made, describe the 'correct' way to link Census Source Citations to the household members, but be aware that is slightly different from you requested idea of having the Census image on the Individual Media tab of each person. The snag with your idea is that it must be repeated for each person and if ever it needs updating then every person must be updated. Whereas the 'correct' approach is to create one separate Source Record with the Census image on its Media tab, and cite that Source from each Census fact. You can still quickly display that image via the Show Media button on the Facts tab or the Sources For yellow citations pane, but it is not on the Individual Media tab that is reserved for photos and Face Frames that appear in the Focus Window.

Thank you Roger, Colin, Tatewise for your replies. I did check the knowledge base first but the video guide here is from an older version of FH. I found the guide outdated and not helpful for understanding what to do.

Thank you Roger for your guide on how to set the source citation up first. This was another area I was unsure of. I imported my family file from another family history program. My last program had corruption- unlinking images/documents. I have began re-adding these images/documents to my FH project. The old source citations have been imported but need deleting as many were incorrectly setup.

Tatewise thank you for explaining that the media page should be used for photos only. I have made the mistake of adding certificates to this page which I will now correct.

I actually like the idea of having the full document image available rather than cropping them. For the census it gives the neighbours and for parish records who else is being christen/ buried/ married on that date. Having the ability to select a set area of text, to zoom in e.g. family of interest, save time re-read documents, particularly if the writing is poor. Is there a similar feature for documents like there is for photos? I know that I can zoom in but this requires finding the information each time, rather than setting it once.

Please note that Roger has explained how to manually create link the entries as an alternative to using Ancestral Sources but really Ancestral Sources is the best way to do this as it will save you a great deal of time and help you to maintain a consistent way of recording your data.

Specifically, which KB video guide needs updating?

The Source record Media tab has exactly the same part frame option but is called Link to Detail.

Nick, I'm really not knocking Ancestral Sources; it's a fantastic resource -- AS craftily hides a load of s-and-h in making attributions, for which we're all extremely grateful. But, I strongly feel that users should understand the basic principles on which GEDCOM, and FH, and AS are based; without that fundamental grasp, future modifications to the users's data are going to prove very difficult. In a nutshell, don't preach the shortcut until they've grasped the step-by-step method.

I really wasn't in any way taking your suggestion as being a swipe at AS, I totally agree that it is essential to understand the mechanics behind what AS is doing but wanted K17 to be aware that it will probably be the best option.

Hi Everyone
Thank you all for your help. Being new I didn't release ancestral sources is an add on program to family historian. Until I read your posts I thought it was a help website to using the program FH. I began the first tutorial which spoke of version 4 and 3 which looked nothing like version 6 FH. At that stage I hadn't used the source citation button in FH either .
I haven't yet looked at any add on programs or plug ins. I am just trying to understand and use correctly all that is in FH after coming across from FTM 2012. I now realise that this program may make that easier for me. I appreciate understanding how to do the entry manually which I think I am doing correctly now.

Please do spend a least that time with how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.
Among other things, it explains that AS is a free companion program to FH.

Yes the ancestralsources:ancestral_sources_tutorial_configure_initial_settings|> Ancestral Sources Tutorial ~ Configure Initial Settings mentions FH Version 4.1 (or later) so the (or later) includes V5 and V6. Yes, the style of the windows may be slightly different, but that is more to do with Windows 8 and Windows 10 than FH. The commands and details should still be OK.
