Married Name - Filters

Post by Gary Carson » 04 Jun 2016 16:02

If a married name is or will be entered as an Alternate Name:
  • How can the Alternate Name be shown as a column in the Records: Individual window?
    How can the Alternate Name be shown as a Customized Data Entry option? There appears to be no option in the Data Reference Assistant window for Individual and option for Alternate Name
Is the proper convention for entering the married name then FirstName MiddleName MarriedSurname?

Yes, I can see how the Name Data Refs are not obvious, because neither Primary Name nor Alternate Name is specifically mentioned.
The Primary Name is %INDI.NAME[1]%
1st Alternate Name is %INDI.NAME[2]%
2nd Alternate Name is %INDI.NAME[3]%
and so on for unlimited Alternate Names ...

Unless you have a particular need to use them, it is not common practice to enter Married names at all. See how_to:handle_people_with_multiple_names|> How to Handle People With Multiple Names.

Note that the Records Window search Filter caters for Married Names automatically via the Spouse link, so you do NOT have to enter them into the woman's Property Box.

I enter married names under 2 circumstances:
  • Where the woman marries twice, as otherwise a diagram centred on her second marriage will show her under her maiden name, not the name she used on marrying into the second family (which appears in the sources) - here I just enter the first married name, relying on convention to allow the reader (me included) to work out the second married name;
  • When the married name is not self-evident given the cultural norms of you or your readers - and the typical American practice of shunting down the last(?) surname to become a middle name (perhaps displacing a previous one) might be one such example;
These are just pragmatic examples to deal with circumstances that I found in my own data.
