Stepfather and half siblings

Post by Estelle74 » 07 May 2016 06:27

I am having difficulty adding a child whose father is unknown but then the mother married and had 3 half-siblings - it keeps saying the stepfather is the father even though I've unchecked birth - when I delete child from stepfather record it deletes child from mother also. I've only been using the program a month or two - any suggestions? Many thanks

I suspect that you have the child listed in the mother's married family. You should create a family with the mother and an unknown spouse. One way to do this (from the Focus window):

Select the child and use the Add>Parent menu. You will be informed that the child already has parents and asked if you wish to add another set. Click Yes and then click link existing record in the next dialog.
This will result in a Select individual dialog. Find the mother and click OK. This will give a list of the families in which she is a parent/spouse. Assuming that Unknown and mother is not one of them select Create a new family and click OK. This will give the child two parent families.

Now select the child as listed in the married family right-click and select Unlink record.

If you make an error or it doesn't do what you were expecting then you can use the Edit menu to undo what you have just done.

Welcome to the FHUG Estelle.

I have moved this to the General Usage Forum, because it is not a New Wish List Request.

See how_to:index#beginners_guide|> Family Historian > Beginners Guide under Relationships for how to handle multiple partnerships, etc.
