Exporting Media Files

Post by Gary Carson » 25 Apr 2016 18:12

I have a large number of media files in FH that I would like to export and share with another person.

They would be all media files of descendants of individual Joe Doe.

I do not need to export a GEDCOM file with photos, all I want are the media files.

Is there a way do that?

Well you could use File Explorer and navigate through the Project's Media folder picking out the files you want to send and copy them to another folder.

However, I suspect you want a more convenient way to select those files by using FH tools.

To do that you will essentially be producing a Project with a Gedcom file and linked Media files, and send everything except the Gedcom file to the other person.

So use File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File.
In the Export Gedcom File dialogue click Select.
In the Select Records dialogue click Add using Query and choose Descendants selecting the Starting Person as Joe Doe.
Ensure Media Records is set to use Full File Paths for External File Links.
Click OK and choose a folder and filename for the Gedcom file.
When asked, decline to open another instance of FH.

Instead, use File > Project Window > New Project > Import a GEDCOM file.
Browse to the just exported Gedcom file.
Ensure Copy any linked multimedia files into new project folder is ticked and click Next>.
Review the New Project Name and probably untick Make default before clicking Finish.

You now have a new Project whose Media subfolder contains only the files you want to send.

Yes, I see how that will work.
