Images - photo orientation

When I introduce an image into my tree some are displayed in the wrong orientation, in all cases I have linked a face to the photograph. I have used two photographs I have taken myself and both are displayed on their side, when I have scanned old photos and uploaded them they are displayed in the correct orientation. Is there any way of rotating photos once in FH. The confusing thing is that when I open up the photos I have taken into a media player they are displayed in the correct orientation and are not lying on the side?

This is a common problem, especially with modern digital devices that know their orientation.

See how_to:v4:adding_multimedia|> Adding Photographs and Other Multimedia under Photo Orientation.

If you are interested in more background details see Use of Rotation meta data in images (12795).

If you wish to rotate jpg/jpegimage on your PC, open it in Picture Viewer, and click one of the left / right rotate buttons.

CAUTION if you don't want the effect to be permanent, make a copy of the file before opening the file in Picture Viewer, as it saves the rotated file automatically, overwriting the original.

Remember that each edit/transformation of a jpg/jpeg file, (e.g. rotation) will lose some information from within the image, so always work on a copy of the original.

Mike, do you mean Windows Photo Viewer?
That is only included by default on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, but not on Vista or Windows 10 (unless upgraded from Win 7/8).
But it is another valid alternative.
Such rotations should not affect image details, because only the EXIF meta-data should be changed, and not the pixels.

Mike,
I do have Windows 10, and Windows Photo Viewer DOES come with it, but in their wisdom, Microsoft decided to hide it, but by following the link below you'll be able to restore it:-

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1431 ... -10-a.html

WARNING Restoration involves making changes to the Registry, using a file downloaded from the above (and other sites), so it is not for the faint hearted.

Suffice to say I downloaded it and it worked fine for me. I'll leave others to decide if they are happy to do this or not.

I now have jpg and jpeg files automatically opening in Photo Viewer by default.

Thanks for your help. Went to the link
"Knowledge Base > Adding Photographs and Other Multimedia under Photo Orientation".
Read it, not really sure I understood it and downloaded the program Irfanview. I played around and now all my photos appear in FH in th ecorrect orientation. Thanks
