Thousands of sources

Post by dklbrooks » 15 Apr 2016 09:27

I gather from reading the forum that "Method 1" is the preferred way of handling sources in FH6, and that is the way I have been doing it since I converted from FTM.
But even my small tree has soon acquired hundreds of sources, especially for Electoral Registers and Census's .
Is there a limit in FH?

To help manage these numbers I use the short title for all sources and list them by short title as I find that making them unique using the full title makes them hard to sort, and browse.

I would be interested to know how others using "method1" handle the huge number of sources.

See my answer to your other posting Handling Electoral Register Sources in FH (13664).

Method 1 is preferred when you need to attach Media &/or Text From Source transcripts of the Source document.

If they are not required, then Method 2 is often easier.

Many users employ both methods, but for different types of document. There are no limits on numbers for any records.

BTW: Regarding adding Sources I hope you have discovered ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources that is included in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

I find that the sources that I cite most frequently after the initial source entry and processing are Method 2 online databases and I use the Type as a coarse filter to remove all Method 1 sources from the list. Thus Type of Method 1 sources begins "1 " and Method 2 begin "2 ". After the start I have progressive refining of the Type filter thus "2 DBY" for Method 2 records in Derbyshire and "2 DBY B" for Births and Baptisms in Derbyshire etc.

There are no limits so don't worry about that. I think it is preferable to have hundreds of sources that can be filtered rather than putting all that data into citations where it is hidden away. Using 'method 2' the data is still there (and actually duplicated multiple times), you just can't see it in one list.

The source type field is also very useful for filtering (and if you do use AS it can be set automatically depending on the type of source being entered).

Thanks people.
See my reply to Mike on the other posting about Electoral Registers.

Using source TYPE and my Short title naming conventions does make it manageable to search the sources. As I said in my other post, my background in IT has left me with the habit of always looking for the most efficient way of doing things.

Yes Mike, I have discovered AS.
It's just that I want to fully understand how the program works by doing things manually at first.
