Hello, I used to use Gedcom Census, but have now discovered Ancestral Sources and I love it. In consequence I have censuses entered in both programs. I am not very technical and although I have had Family Historian from when it came out I probably don't use all its qualities. I wondered if it would be possible to bring up a census in the form in which it was entered. Apologies if this is a silly question.

It is a common misconception that Ancestral Sources, and its predecessor Gedcom Census, have their own database, when they do not.

Ancestral Sources is simply a convenient dialogue for entering new data into Family Historian. Thereafter, everything is managed via the Family Historian dialogues.

Can you explain why you want "to bring up a census in the form in which it was entered".

Hello, thank you for the reply. I like to see the family listed in order. Recently going through some of my information I have discovered people who I now find are linked but for example are just listed as visitors or boarders in the censuses. It also helps to see who has come and gone from one census to the next. I see things better in that format, as I see things better in the tree format, especially when children name their children all the same in generation after generation! I also generate reports which helps to correct any errors I may have made in entry or to see where information is missing. I will look at what you suggest. Than you Ann

Assuming you created the Auto-text Census Grid and saved it with the Source record, then that data will exist in FH.

For an example, select an Individual you know is the head of a Census Household entry, and use Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Individual Census Report to obtain details of the data entered by AS (and GC).

You can also find that data in the associated Source records for those Census entries.

To add extra people, you will need to update the Source record itself, and then add Citations to new Census related facts for those people, such as Census Event, Occupation Attribute, and Birth Event.

Also to do with census entries, in 1861 I have a family where the last child is listed as "son" (although mother is too old). In 1871 all the children have left except this child who is now listed as grandson. Looking on the Staffordshire bmd site his mother's maiden name is the same as his surname, presumably he is the illegitimate son of one of the daughters. I know I can unlink him from the grandparents (at present they are listed as parents) but I would like to keep him in the family although I don't know either of his parents. Thank you Ann

You could link the 'grandson' to any of the daughters that are his potential mother, and add Notes about your assumptions.

Order the Birth Certificate for him and that should identify his mother so you can correct the link.

Thank you. As he is not a direct line and a sibling's child I was being mean and didn't want to send for the certificate! I will do as you suggest.

The other tactic is to invent a further daughter with the first name of "unknown which", add various notes explaining that this is not a real person but one of the others, and make them the mother.

Ordinarily this would horrify me but I have found no better solution that shows the grandchild automatically in a diagram.

I use the same tactic as Adrian (above). If the correct mother is later identified as one of the "real" sisters, then you can merge that "real" individual record with the dummy "unknown which".

Ha! Thought at first you meant 'unknown witch' LOL!
I also use an invented person for the purpose of skipping a generation like this. It saves any misunderstanding about it definitely being any particular daughter.
