A question when accessing various options of the
Tools i.e.
Tools>Work with Data>Occupation
Once the
Occupation List window comes up one of the choices is to look at the
Records.
- Once a record is high lighted/selected, one of the options is to "Go To". Once you "Go To" the Occupation List goes away.
Is there a way to retain the Occupation List and continue to work with it without having to restart from the beginning?

Once you have clicked Go To there is no way to retain the Occupations list.
However, instead of clicking Go To button, click the [+] next to the Record to expand the details (rather like expanding folders in File Explorer).
You will be able to see the Occupation facts and click their [+] to expand their details.
When finished, click Cancel and the Occupations list is still available.
Also see fhugdownloads:contents:occupations_report_query|> Query:Individual ~ Occupations Report Query and associated fhugdownloads:contents:individual_occupations_report|> Report Type ~ Individual Occupations.

Coming from Legacy Family Tree, one feature of Family Historian I really like is being able to run two instances of the program concurrently. Legacy FT does not permit it because of the way it uses the Windows registry (I think).
FWIW, occasionally when a data screen/list closes in order to use a tool or whatever with it's own screen, I've found running a 2nd instance of FH with the first screen displayed allows a side by side display of what I wish to see. Of course keep in mind you should only 'save' any changes from one of these instances. To be safe, you could even run the second instance from a copy of the FH gedcom.
This pertains to Windows 7 OS, FH 6.1.4 in my case.

Ron, I suspect why Legacy cannot run more than one instance is because it uses an SQL database engine that locks the data files.
Unfortunately, Gary cannot use your technique because he wants to use the Occupations list interactively to display Records that utilise a particular Occupation value.

Sorry, thought it might help.
As to Legacy, so only one instance of the SQL database engine can be running, right? OK, I was mistaken about the registry then.

Yes, it does help in some circumstances but not in this case.
On further investigation it seems tha Legacy uses either the Microsoft Jet Database Engine or perhaps Visual Basic 6 on a Microsoft Office Access database. The challenge with Relational Databases such as that, is maintaining data integrity with multiple users potentially changing the same fields and relationships. So the easy solution is to only allow one user at a time.
It is possible to run multiple instances of database engines, and it is easy on different databases, but difficult on a shared database.
Multiple access to the Windows Registry is happening all the time in Windows programs.

I can understand the field/relationship issue muiltiple users of the same
Legacy database, but seems restrictive when two different db files are being accessed by the same user, which is what I was suggesting. I suppose if it tags the user to the data in some way then that would make sense. A moot point for me I guess, since my work now will be in FH exclusively for data input.
Thanks,
Ron

I want to do more than view the expanded record. I want to edit part or parts of the record. I can only edit the record by selecting the record and then clicking "Go To". Once I have then viewed/edited the record, I wish to return to "Records using..."

Did you try the fhugdownloads:contents:occupations_report_query|> Query:Individual ~ Occupations Report Query which lists all the Occupations and the Records that use them, which you can click on to open their Propery Box and edit, whilst still retaining the Query Result Set.
Alternatively, use View > Standard Queries > All Facts, click on the Value column header, and then the Fact Type column header.
Scroll down and all the Occupation facts will be listed together grouped by Value, but not necessarily alphabetically.
Double-click the Fact Owner to open their Property Box and edit, whilst retaining the Query Result Set.
It is easy to create a custom version of that All Facts query to list just Occupations in alphabetical order if necessary.

The suggestion above did exactly what I wanted. I just need to get better at setting up custom queries.
