Spouse duplicated

Post by d1anep » 11 Mar 2016 04:28

I've found that I have duplicated a spouse, so all their descendants, etc, are duplicated. The husband did have a second marriage, but it shows that he married his first wife again. How do I delete the spouse the second time without deleting her completely?

Merge the duplicated individuals and edit/annotate the events/facts to make sense of the sequence , but make sure you backup the project first in case of problems/mistakes.

I suspect you may NOT actually have a duplicated Spouse record, but a duplicated Family record.
Check the Record Id of the 'two' Spouses and if the same, then my suspicion is correct.

See how_to:correcting_duplicate_spouses_families|> Correcting Duplicate Spouses/Families.

If the 'two' Spouses do have different Record Id then use the technique in the video above, but select the two Individual records instead to perform the Merge.

However, as Mervyn advises, use File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup beforehand just in case!!!

When I watch the video, the first thing it says is to click on the person, go to View/Record links, and it will show 2 family records basically the same. However, when I do this, it doesn't show two family records the same - it just shows two other individuals linked to the person. Therefore, there are no records to merge.

So, in the Focus Window you have Abraham KENNAWAY and ElizabethSHEPHERD and probably Mary shown as spouses of each other with Abraham and Elizabeth listed twice as a couple as in the video?

If their Record Id are not shown in square brackets, then please click the Customize View link top right of Focus pane, and tick Show Record Ids centre left and click OK.

Are the [Record Id] of Abraham and Elizabeth the same in both their boxes?
If so, that shows their Family Record is duplicated, otherwise post a screenshot and ask for advice.

Click on Abraham to select his box then in the View menu select Record Links to open the Record Links window.
Expand the width of the Records column to reveal entire name as shown in the video by dragging the junction between column headers.
There may be several records shown but it must include at least one Family Record and my suspicion is that it will list three, and maybe some Individual records.

You should then identify the two Family Records named ... of Abraham KENNAWAY and ElizabethSHEPHERD and merge them as advised in the video.
