Places, Unused
In a program I have a large number of places that are not used according to the PLACE LIST generated by TOOLS/WORK WITH DATA/PALCES. I have verified these PLACES are not used by doing WHERE USED. How can I purge those places?

Re: Places, Unused
You need to make a Named List of the unused places:
1. Go to the Records Window, Places Tab and alt-click the Links column to sort the places by number of links with the unused at the top of the list.
2. Select the first and then shift-click the last of the places with 0 links to select all the unused places.
3. Use the Edit>Add to Named List menu to create a named list of the unused places, making sure that the name is not already used. In these circumstances I find '000' the best (assuming it is not used)
4. Still in the Records window click the "Named List Pane" button to show the named lists and right-click the '000' named list; one of the options is 'Delete Listed Records', click it.
You will now get a message box, read it carefully in particular making sure the List is the correct one, and if you are happy with it check the 'I understand...' box and finally the Delete Records button.
A final bit of housekeeping might be to delete the '000' named list using the right-click menu again but now selecting Delete List

BTW: The same strategy applies to bulk deleting any type of record as explained in how_to:delete_a_large_number_of_records|> Delete A Large Number of Records under Records Window.

That worked perfectly. Thanks for the help. Starting to get a feel for the nuances of the program. Have been cleaning up a lot of data imported from a 25,000 name TMG file.
