Sources, Copying between projects

Post by Gary Carson » 09 Mar 2016 04:12

Is there a way to copy or share sources between projects?

Yes, but why?
If you have so many Sources common to more than one Project it suggests you should really consider merging those Projects into one large Project and avoid the replication.

Presumably you are talking about Source records and any linked Media or Repository records, and realise that you will still have to enter the Citations against each Fact, etc.

If there are not so many, then it may be easier to simply re-enter them via Ancestral Sources into the other Projects, which has the benefit of creating the Citations too.

However, the process to export the Source records and linked records is:
  1. Use File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File but do NOT select any Individual Records.
  2. Tick the records to Exclude, i.e. Note records, Submitter records, Submission records.
  3. Untick Unconnected Records or nothing will get exported.
  4. Leave Multimedia Records at Use Full File Paths for External File Links.
  5. Click OK and ignore the warning about Individual records.
  6. Choose a suitable name and location to Save the exported GEDCOM file, and agree to view exported file.
  7. In the Sources only Gedcom check the Records Window lists what you want.
  8. On the Multimedia tab there will probably be many records with 0 Links that must be deleted as explained in how_to:delete_a_large_number_of_records|> Delete A Large Number of Records under Records Window.
  9. Backup and Save the Gedcom.
Now in each destination Project use File > Merge/Compare File to import that Sources only Gedcom file.
