Record Source, Adding to multiple records

Post by Gary Carson » 07 Mar 2016 19:48

I have a database that I want to add a Record Source to all individuals.

Alternate is to add the same Source to all the Facts in the database.

How best do I do this.

Gary, the easiest way to achieve that is to create a new empty Project and Merge your current database into the new Project, because that offers various options to add a Source to every record, etc.

I suggest you experiment first to understand the process and the results, delete the experimental Project, and repeat the process for real using your learnt experience.

Here are the steps:
  1. Ensure your current database is a valid Project called say Old. e.g. Use Tools > External File Links and ensure there are no X marks; use File > Validate and Tools > Find Uncategorised Data to check all OK.
  2. Create an empty database using File > Project Window > New Project > Start a new project. Give the Starting Person a name such as XYZ and Sex: Unknown, then set the New Project Name to say New.
  3. In this New Project use File > Merge/Compare File and select the Old Project file ...\Family Historian Projects\Old\Old.fh_proj accepting all the defaults.
  4. In the Merge File window, select the Current Record with name XYZ and click Discard lower left.
  5. Now click Merge lower right, click OK to proceed anyway, and OK both ticked Merge Options.
  6. In the New Source record details dialogue select options as advised by the Help page, then click OK.

The process worked well. The one modification was to rename the Source and filling in information as I wanted it to appear in the Source dialog.
