Default Backup Folder

Post by rabble » 23 Feb 2016 13:37

Today I set up a second project for a family branch of my main project in order to collate all associated information with the intention to merge into my main project at a later date.
For this second project I created a separate backup folder.
When I closed the second project and opened my main project I discovered that the backup location now pointed to the one that I had set up for the second project.
I reset the main project backup location and closed the main project.
I then reopened the second project I found that the second project backup location now pointed to the one that I had reset for the main project.
It appears that when I open a project, Family Historian is setting the backup folder location to the backup folder location assigned to the previous opened project.
Has anyone else noticed this??
BTW - I have just upgraded to Version 6.1.4
Regards, Bob

Yes, the default backup folder is the same for all projects.

However when you select File....Backup/Restore then select any backup type, the Enter Backup File Name windows opens at the default, but if you then select a different folder and click Save it then asks if you want to make the new location the default. You can choose No if you just want to make this one backup to a different folder other than the default one.

I have FH setup to offer a gedcom backup when I close the program, and this goes to the default location. However I keep my full Project backups in a different folder, so just select this folder on a one off basis.

Tools > Preferences > Backup is like most other Tools > Preferences settings and applies to ALL Projects.

However, the default naming convention ensures that each Project backup is distinct.

David and Tatewise,
Thank you both for the clarification.
I will set my backup folder to one level higher, select the folder I require and then select No when the Family Historian prompt appears.
