Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Hello All,
I am totally new to FH, having upgraded today from TMG. I have bought a license, so I have 6.1.3 installed. Bringing over my project from TMG went seamlessly, but now I am confronted with a problem. I have noticed that many of my TMG roles as witnesses read wrong in the sentence narrative listed at the bottom of the fact sheet.
For example, I had changed my residence tag to include different roles. One role I used was named "until M" the m standing for married. So, I now see the my sentence related to this tag, reads: " He was a Until M at Residence of John SMITH and Jane Doe between 1962 and 1992 in 450 Oak Street..."
I have been totally stalled as to where and how I can start fixing these sentences. Can they be done globally as in TMG or must each individual sentence be changed?
Where would I find the location to make these changes? I have found the tools> Fact types dialog page and have figured out that I need to "show hidden" in order to see those tag types from TMG. But, when I try to edit them, I get a box stating "this event or attribute is currently undefined" would I like to define it. If I say yes, a new box pops up with everything grayed out except the Fact type box, and I am totally unable to do anything. I can't even tell if this is where the tag that needs to be fixed, resides.
If someone could point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful. I saw somewhere that there will be a new book for FH which hopefully can answer many of my questions. Is it available now or does anyone know when it will be.
TIA - for your help,
Helen

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Welcome to the FHUG Helen.
You were almost there with Tools > Fact Types and Show Hidden and Edit.
BUT if you are talking about the standard Residence fact Witnesses then they are held within the Residence fact definition. So select that existing (not hidden) fact and click Edit. See the Fact Definition dialogue advice below.
On the other hand, for your hidden/undefined custom TMG facts, when you say you are "totally unable to do anything" did you not try the Create button, which is what the original message asked if you wanted to do?
Before doing that though, you can choose your Fact Set, which is a way of grouping related fact definitions into one custom file, that can be separately Renamed, Cloned, Imported, Exported, etc. So I suggest typing in a Fact Set name of TMG and then click the Create button.
That opens a Fact Definition dialogue that is like the TMG global definitions.
Click Help for advice, and follow links in two directions:
1) Template Codes for Principal Sentence definitions.
2) Witness Roles Dialog and Edit Role Dialog which also leads to Template Codes for Witness Sentence definitions.
Back on the actual Fact Definition dialogue you will probably have to adjust a few settings and create your Witness Roles.
If you get stuck then ask again.
Maybe some of your custom TMG facts are Census 1841, Census 1851, etc. These should be changed to standard Census Events by using the Change Any Fact Tag plugin. Similarly, any other custom TMG facts should be changed where possible to standard GEDCOM facts that are more exportable, and already have Fact definitions, and supported by default in Reports and Diagrams.
I suspect the new V6 Book may come out with the formal release of V6.1 but only Calico Pie really know. The old V5 Book does cover many of the principles of custom Fact Definition in Chapter 6, but not the new features in V6. See also how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Thanks for answering so quickly, Mike and for trying to help me. I tried to follow what you said but am so new, it seems like Greek to me!!!
I have been looking for the book as it was mentioned on the site that it was a free download with the program.... but I cannot locate it on my computer. Would you know the title of the file and where it might be located?
I have tried to make a custom fact set, but it will not let me save it. Seems that in TMG one was allowed to title facts with a dash or underscore. In FH it seems that it is not allowed..... but in the create box, the only thing I am allowed to enter is the name of the new file set.... all other boxes are grayed out and therefore I cannot rename the fact.
Also, where can I find the Change any Fact Tag plug in.....I would like to try and see if that helps.
The one thing I have not been able to find, or even see, is the actual roles that I entered.... I cannot locate them in tags.
Thanks for all your help,
Helen

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Several of the answers are in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.
Just keep following the orange links of interest.
The Book is covered in the Documentation and is a download from the Calico Pie web site.
Plugins are also covered under the cunning title of Plugins that are also downloaded from the Calico Pie web site.
Like any new product you need to spend some time getting familiar with its Key Features.
Regarding Fact Definitions just persevere with the Create button.
The greyed out fields ensure the definition is correctly coupled to the existing facts themselves in your database.
Once you have the Fact Definition dialogue the Label field lets you use any characters in the displayed fact name.
A lot of advice is under the Help button.
On the other hand, if you are trying to create a brand new Custom Fact then use the New button instead of Edit, but remember that will be totally unrelated to anything in your database, and all such facts must be entered from scratch.
You don't need to save Fact Definitions as that happens automatically.
As I said, select the standard Residence fact, click Edit, and then the Roles button, and they should all be there.

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Thanks again, Mike, your answers are so helpful. I have found the book and downloaded it.... so it will be a great place for me to start.
Your last suggestion that the roles should appear under the residence standard tag, does not seem to be working..... The only role under the residence tag is that of Resident. I still think that my custom TMG tags contain all the roles I added... but I cannot access them because the fact tag has a hyphen in it and it will not allow me to create a custom tag and then view it.
I will keep playing but if you have any further ideas, I would be interested in hearing them. I wonder if this is past of the problem in importing from TMG?
Regards,
Helen

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Helen,
To modify a sentence, go to Tools > Fact Types, select the type you want to edir, then > Edit and you will have something similar to the Tag type entry in TMG.
Sentence structure is different, of course, but you can edit the sentences for each role there (click on the Roles.... button). BUT although
FH imports the TMG role name, it doesn't add it to the roles in the Fact types (which is why you're not seeing them), probably because it doesn't attempt to convert TMG sentences either, so you have to do that yourself too.
Now, go back to the Fact Types window. On the right, tick the Show Hidden box. Apart from showing more info, suddenly all the custom Fact types that got added to FH on the TMG import get shown (provided you also have 'Fact Set' set to All). These imported tags will all show with a Fact Set name of <none>, so you now need to go through and change them all to whatever you like (Custom, or exTMG, or whatever) so you can edit them (although I'm not sure what your minus signs in front might do to them). And you need to add sentences for them, etc. Which is a total pain to do (I actually have more of these ex-TMG custom Facts than there are std FH Facts, which says something....)
I have suggested to Calico Pie that FH should convert TMG sentences to FH structures (it would be a unique sell capability). Of course if FH did it properly it would also add the Fact Types it imported from TMG with all the correct roles imported already, Fact Set name set to something, sentences converted etc etc. Would save us a lot of work....
Now a warning. Changing the Fact type sentence like this is the same as doing a global sentence change in TMG (i.e. at the Tag Level).
To make a sentence change at what we TMGers would call the local level (i.e. applicable just to the individual event), go to the Properties window for the individual, click on the Facts tab, click on the fact you're after, then click the Sentence area a bit further down - its greyed out, but it is editable.
Be aware that changing a sentence at the local level puts an entry against that person's entry in the FH GEDCOM file (using a non-standard GEDCOM extension). But changing a global sentence makes a change to an FH file where it stores this sort of global stuff. This means these global sentences apply to ALL the FH Projects you are using - unlike TMG where you can have different settings at the Project level.

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Helen,
In TMG your custom fact tags may have had a hyphen or underscore, but in FH they have a different GEDCOM compatible tag name, and the displayed name will not be identical to the tag.
If you recognise a custom TMG fact name in the Tools > Fact Types list (after ticking Show Hidden), then that relates to its new name in FH, and you must not change it.
e.g. the standard Residence fact has the RESI tag, whereas a custom Residence fact has the EVEN-RESIDENCE tag (or perhaps _ATTR-RESIDENCE tag), and may be in conflict.
It is possible that your TMG custom Residence fact is in conflict with the standard Residence fact. In which case one of them will be <eclipsed> by the other. Without being able to see your screen, it is difficult to know exactly how your TMG facts and the FH standard facts and the Witnesses are interacting. If you can attach screenshots to these postings that might help.
If after clicking Show Hidden there is only one fact with a name anything like Residence, then that is the one that needs editing to define its Roles. If your TMG Role Until M is not listed then add it via the Roles button.
Perhaps instead of struggling with the dialogues, take some time to work through the Book tutorials. As you say it is a great place to start, and then FH techniques will fall into place. Be prepared to accept that they will be different from TMG.

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Ah, Don... Thank you. Your response clears up another of my problems. I kept looking for all my role sentences.... so at least now I know the reason they are not there. What a tremendous amount of work I have ahead for myself. My roles seem to have come across in sentences such as, She W after B experienced..... The W after B being the role, Witness "after Birth". So I now figure probably 75% of my tags need to be rewritten to not only change the "experienced" part of the sentence but also the role sentence. Where I can, I will use the change the Fact plugin but there are still many that need to be done globally.
I understand about not doing it locally.... Thanks for the head up.
Is there anything else, I need to consider in making this transition from TMG?
Thanks,
Helen

Re: Upgraded from TMG -need to fix witness sentences
Well Helen - 'anything else you need to know' = lots, but search the forum for the other TMG tips and tricks. And at the risk of annoying all the dedicated FH users on the forum, the main 'other thing' is not to bother leaving TMG - most of the heavy TMG users I know are staying put, as nothing else offers it's features. Having surveyed the market's offerings, I see no reason to move - although I agree with your choice of FH if you feel you must leave TMG.
