Alternate names in Indiv Records list; how to show?

Post by torleiffh » 12 Feb 2016 10:10

I have a project with royal families of Norway and UK (from my TMG database).

a)
I can't find out how to show king Olav's alternate name "Alexander Edward Christian Frederik" in the sorted names list, it seems not possible?
b)
It seems that the Source of Olav's alternate name is NOT imported from TMG.

(I' comparing FH to RootsMagic and still the final choice has not been made...)

I think what you are asking for is to mix in the alternate names into the first column of names in the Individuals tab of the Records Window. I don't think that is possible. You can however show them alongside the name of the individual as follows. You need to add an extra column to the Records Window with the Individuals tab selected. So start with the Records Window and the Individuals tab selected

Right-click the header line: and choose Configure Columns.
A two column dialog box will pop up. In the left column scroll to the bottom and select <Other > and click the > that shows up between the columns.
A new dialog box will pop-up.
In the Heading: field enter the heading you would like to the column, for example AKA.
In the Expresson field enter %INDI.NAME[2]%, this will pick up the second name.
When you click OK the new column will appear at the bottom of the list on the right in the two column dialog box.
Select it and using the arrows just under the bottom of the box and move it to the top.
Click OK and the new column will now show you the first alternate name alongside the record NAME.

If you need to see more than one AKA then add extra columns increasing the index in NAME[index] (and using a name other than AKA)

a)
Maybe you are asking for all Primary Names and Alternative Names to appear in a single sorted list.
The Search All Possible Names Plugin will provide that list, and even includes the married names of women.
Its default mode, with the initial dialogue blank, will list absolutely every Name and the associated details.

b)
Presumably you followed the advice in how_to:import_from_tmg|> Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG) and used the Import TMG Project method, and NOT the Import GEDCOM File method.
Where have you looked for the Source Citation?
Open his Property Box and enable the yellow Sources For pane.
Click on the drop-list of the Sources For box at the top of that pane.
It should list Name, Name[2], Name[3], et seq.
If any have an asterisk * suffix, then they have a Source Citation, and selecting that item will display it.
If that proves any Source Citation is missing then report that problem to Calico Pie Support.

Thanks for the 2 alternatives, they worked in a way, but I'm not at all satisfied that FH does not show ALL names in it's standard Individual Names list.
There is a Filter option in the Individuals list; "Alternate names". But it does not work, showing no alternate names.

TMG has shown ALL names (alternate names and married names) for decades and RootsMagic does it.
1 - 0 to RM now...

a)
The reason FH only shows Primary Names in the Records Window on Individuals tab is that, as its name implies, it is listing Individual Records not Names. The same applies to the other Records Window tabs, where each row is a Record of the chosen type.
When I am next at my PC, I'll check the Filter issue you mention.
All programs offer different capabilities and the pros and cons are a personal decision.

b)
Did my advice about Source Citations help at all?

I think the filter issue may be explained in the same way as a}. The filter can look for the filtered name in alternate names as well as the record names but it still displays only the record containing the alternate name not the alternate name itself, unless you have a column showing alternate names.
