Formatting individual reports

Post by historyfanatic » 05 Feb 2016 16:06

I'm afraid it's me again! Having fully understood Media now and have completed an Individual Summary Report complete with photos how can I change the font size and justify my page? It does look very professional! Thanks

Did you take my advice and as a newcomer work through how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and follow up all the links, especially the Book: "Getting the Most From Family Historian 5" with many tutorials including chapter 17 Reports that mentions changing fonts.

See also how_to:report_content_multimedia_format_layout|> Report Content, Media, Format and Layout especially the how_to:report_options:format|> Report Options ~ Format Tab.

I am not sure what you mean by "justify my page"?

Have begun to read Knowlege Base etc and by justifying I mean that the ends of lines are all uniform to the page. Haven't found it. Having used FTM for many years are finding such a difference but will keep on perserving! Thanks for help.

I am not suggesting you read the whole Knowledge Base (at least not today!) but the free PDF Book: "Getting the Most From Family Historian 5" should be top of your list.

Not sure how justifying would apply to an Individual Summary Report where it is mostly tabulated columns of short details per fact.

If you are talking about an Individual Narrative Report then you would need to use Save Report As > Word-Processor Document (RTF) and change the text style to Justified using a word-processor.

Mike, an individual summary report can include extensive notes that would benefit from justification, if it were possible (which I don't think it is).

That is true, and it's not possible (within FH).

As Mike implies indirectly, it is possible to justify the text outside FH if you first save it as .RTF and then open it in Word or similar.

The only sensible way to do it is to operate on the style that FH uses for the notes - "Subsection Data" seems to be the style for the notes for each event or attribute, while notes held at the individual level have style "Section Data" (Citations use this style as well.)

In both cases, select the style (usually by clicking in some text of that style first, then looking at whatever list of styles appears in your word processor), then alter the justification of the style to "Justified".

All this is vague, I appreciate. I did try to screen shot the first steps in Word 2010 but the floating Style palette disappeared as soon as I clicked on the screen shot tool. :(

If you don't understand Styles, this may not be a good idea.

Formatting notes

Yes, a little bit of confusion but a lot to digest. I have the whole week-end (except for the rugby!) to read and sort out. I will get there! Thanks for all the advice.
