Event Labels

I apologise if this is in the wrong place or has been addressed before.

Is there any way to change an event label on specific records?

When I started I entered all of my census data under the event 'census' and distinguished between the different census years through the date field, however I now wish to add census data as specific date related events ie, 1841 Census, 1851 Census etc. I have already added a fair amount of data - is is possible to select all of the 'census' events with a date of 1841 and change their event label to '1841 census' or do I have to re-enter (or copy) the data into the new event for each record. I don't think the Change Any Fact Tag plugin is what I need for this.

(I want to make this change because I found it frustrating that with the previous method 'census [1]' for one person was not necessarily the same year census for someone else)

Many thanks

Jenny :)

I can't now remember why, but some years ago I was advised to use Census 1841 rather than 1841 Census. I think that the advice came from Nick Walker who produces the Ancestral Sources program for entering census data (and other data) into FH.

Either Nick, if he reads this, or someone else may know the reason.

You can do that with the Change Any Facts Tag Plugin, but I very strongly advise against it.

There are many reasons to stick with the standard Census Event.

Your proposed custom Census Events would not necessarily migrate well to any other genealogy product.
The FH Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Individual Census Report will not work.
The Lookup Missing Census Facts Plugin will not work.
The Occupations Per Census Year and Gender Plugin will not work.
The Show Project Statistics Plugin will not report Census details.
The Standard Diagram Text Schemes for Census will need adapting.
Ancestral Sources only supports the standard Census Event.
Probably others...

The way to obtain the same Census Year Event for different Individuals is to use the special year= index.
So for anyone %INDI.CENS[year=1841]% will reference the Census Event with a Date in 1841.
Similarly, use %INDI.CENS[year=1911]% for any Date in 1911.

See the fhugdownloads:contents:property_box_tabs_census_uk|> Property Box Tabs: Census UK that uses exactly that technique to list Census Events year by year.

Many thanks Mike, I'll leave it as it is.

No I would never have suggested using custom Facts - you should always use the standard census Fact as Mike says. Ancestral Sources only supports the use of the standard census fact. I think you might be thinking of names for flags?

Best wishes

Nick

@Nick
Having slept on it, I recall it was nothing to do with Fact name it was either about source/media record/media file name, or as you say census flags.
Sorry for the red herring!
