Windows 10

Post by bruceernest » 20 Jan 2016 15:55

Have just installed Windows 10. Backed up FH prior to this but the desktop link to FH has disappeared.
The FH file folder is on my backup disk.
How can I open and login to the FH programme to load the file?
Was using FH 6.

Do you mean installed from a wiped disk or upgraded?

I'm working from memory here, so apologies if I"m not quite right:

Click on start
In the start menu that opens, click on All Applications
Scroll through the list, or click on an index letter and then click on F to jump through the list more quickly
When you get to Family Historian in the list, double left click to open it, or single right click to select "pin to start" or "pin to task bar"

"Pin to start" will put a larger icon on the right hand side of the start menu, so you don't have to scroll through the app list every time to find it.
"Pin to taskbar" will put (and keep) an icon on the taskbar across the bottom of your screen, so you don't have to open start at all to get to FH.

I had this issue with a friends Win 8.1 to Win 10 upgrade. I had to reinstall FH V6 with administrator permissions and then all was OK for him.

If you did a "clean install" of Windows 10 (had the Windows 10 installation start afresh, thereby wiping/resetting your C drive), rather than an "upgrade in place" (instructed the Windows 10 installation to save all of your files, settings, and programs), then you will need to reinstall any 3rd-party programs, including FH, before you can use them again.

(The clean install is the better option, in my opinion, but it does mean more work to get things back to how you want them to be.)

If you did an "upgrade in place", then FH should (?) be right there. However some people have had issues and needed to reinstall FH using administrator permissions as Valkrider mentions. There are other threads in the forum about that, I believe.

Thanks for all your help but it looks like I have reinstall. Having had FH since 2009 I do have the Transaction ID and all the
the upgrade licence details but where do I start. Is there a Link that I can begin from?
Not a computer expert I`m afraid!
Thanks for any replies.

You don't need to go back to any earlier versions.

All you need is the Upgrade V5 to V6 downloaded installation file you bought and the V5 and V6 licence details.
Its filename is something like upgrade_fh_v5_to_v6.0.0-dl.exe.
It will ask for both sets of licence details.
Then you upgrade to the latest free download from FH website.

See how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details.

If you cannot find that installation file or licence details then see how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems.
