BMD Icons in Diagrams

I've managed to get the census icons to appear under the boxes in my diagrams by using the Census Expression, I now want to do the same where I have a Birth, Marriage or Death Certificate, how do I phrase the Expression please, my Source always starts off with the words Birth/Marriage/Death Certificate.

Thanks

Margaret.

See the how_to:understanding_expressions|> Understanding Expressions under Source Citation Fields for general ideas.

It would be best if each Source record used the Type field to classify it as a Birth, Marriage, Death or Census document.

Then you can always use the %INDI.BIRT.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Birth" style of expression.

Thank you Mike, I did read the Knowledge Base > Understanding Expressions but to be honest I didn't understand very much of it, but, I did manage to work out and copy the expression for the Census which works fine. I have also just added Birth in the Type Box to one Birth Certificate Source and copied the Expression that you used in your reply and it worked so I now just have to add 'Birth' into all the other sources. What do I use for Marriage and death please? Is Marriage 'Marr' and Death 'Deat'? Sorry for must seem to you very basic questions but FH seems to be getting too clever for me or maybe I'm just getting too old and woolly for it!

Thanks

Margaret

Death is easy, and just like Birth:

=IsTrue(%INDI.DEAT.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Death")

Marriage is a bit trickier because the Marriage Event is held in the Family record:

=IsTrue(%CUR~FAMS>MARR.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Marriage")

Thank you Mike, I now have Birth & Death working but the Marriage comes up with 'Invalid Expression', I've tried working it out but not had any luck, can you put me right please.

Many thanks

Margaret.

Did you Copy & Paste the Expression from my posting?

It helps if you Copy & Paste the Invalid Expression from FH to here so I can see it.

Hello Mike, Yes I always copy & paste if I can, I've just tried again with the same result. This is what I am pasting:-

=IsTrue(%CUR~FAMS>MARR.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Marriage")

Ah sorry, I see now, it is one of the enhancements that comes with FH V6.1.1 that I am testing.

Standard FH V6.0.0 won't like that tilde ~ so replace it with underscore _ as below:

=IsTrue(%CUR_FAMS>MARR.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Marriage")

I've been following this thread (and others) and gradually replacing my flags with expressions.

I've found that using the expressions in this thread only works if the birth certificate source is the first in the list of sources for the birth fact. I like to list the various sources for each fact in date order of when I found them, so that the birth certificate isn't always the first source.

I've also read the help file regarding "advanced indices" and managed to write different, separate expressions for the birth certificate being the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc source.

Is there a way of writing just one expression in such a way that the source order is irrelevant?

Sorry Simon, there is no way to have one simple Expression independent of Source Citation order.

I must admit it is unusual to list Source Citations in discovery order.
I don't see what purpose that serves.
Usual they are listed in order of significance, so for a Birth Event a Birth Certificate or Parish Record would be most significant and come first.
In other words, the most significant justification for the fact details such as Date and Place would be cited first.

In the Source record itself the Updated date/time stamp is usually a good indicator of when discovered, so the order can be determined that way, or you could add a Note with an informal date.

Most Queries that check such things as whether say a Certificate has been cited by BMD events rely on those citations being first.

Thanks Mike, I can see your point, it was just the way I liked doing it!

I think I'll take your suggestion about adding an informal date in the note and rearrange the order of the citations. The problem with the date/time stamp of the source is that it changes whenever I make a correction after reading one of your other useful tips!
