Free Gedcom downloads

Post by Firetrap9999 » 15 Jan 2016 09:26

Apologies in advance if this is either the wrong forum or the topic has already been covered, I have only just purchased and loaded my FH6 and joined this Forum. I am awaiting a Gedcom file from my sister to import but was wondering what free resources are out there to import, I.e. Census etc. My tree is concerned with Cullum family Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Any help appreciated.

Welcome to the FHUG.
I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum that is more appropriate.

The Ancestral Sources Forum is to do with the free companion program ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources that comes highly recommended.

As a newcomer I advise you work through how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

You don't say what dialect of GEDCOM your sister is sending. Is it from FH V6 or from some other genealogy product? If the latter, then see how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian|> Importing to Family Historian.

For researching your family history take a look at research:index|> Genealogy Research especially research:useful_research_web_sites|> Useful Research Web Sites for England & Wales but I'm afraid many are subscription only, except FreeBMD, FreeREG, and FeeCEN.

There is also a wealth of links to good material on UKBMD.org.uk.

It is divided by counties (pre-1974 variety) and all UK counties are there. What is available varies from one county to another. If the local registration services for your counties have digitsied their BMD indexes you will be able to find links on UKBMD. In other counties the local volunteer BMD team have/are digitised(ing) the local superintendent registrar's indexes - I find their work to be uniformly of very high standard and it is more complete than GRO indexes.

Happy hunting!
