Install on 2nd PC from V6 upgrade

Post by CaroleRiley » 12 Jan 2016 11:59

I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I can't find an answer. I have V6 installed on my main laptop, upgraded from V5. I want to install V6 on my Surface Pro for external research and it won't accept my V6 key. It's new since V5 and has never had FH installed before. Do I have to install V5 on it first? I've been struggling with this all day having started a new client project from scratch which I cannot now import back into TMG so I need to get this to work before going out for research tomorrow.

Thanks in advance

Carole

Hi Carole.

Since you upgraded from V5 to V6 you would have used an Upgrade V5 to V6 download or CD on your laptop.

You must use exactly the same Upgrade V5 to V6 download or CD on your Surface Pro.
Do NOT use a full V6 Trial download or anything else from the Calico Pie web site.

When you install the Upgrade V5 to V6 you will be asked for both your V5 and V6 licence details.
You do NOT need to install V5.

See how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide for the steps to migrate from laptop to Surface Pro.

See how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details for installation steps.

Thanks for the quick reply Mike. I can't find the original upgrade download at the moment so I'll struggle with this procedure when I have more time.

Cheers

If you follow the how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems advice then Calico Pie will soon send another download copy.

Exactly what is the TMG problem?
If you are trying to use the native FH GEDCOM then its UNICODE UTF-16 format may not be recognised by TMG.
Try using the File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File with UTF-8 format.

Alternatively, try the Export Gedcom File Plugin, although it has no specific setting for TMG as it is discontinued.
So try the Standard Gedcom 5.5 setting.

For anyone finding this post to answer the same question, I was sent a new temporary link to the download, since the old one in the original email was only valid for a couple of weeks. I had been looking for a file with a name beginning with F for Family Historian but the file is actually called upgrade_fh5_to_6.0.0_dl.exe. I hope I can just use this file next time when my current laptop needs replacing.

Thanks to Mike and the customer service staff for the help.

Cheers

Thank you for the positive feedback, Carole.

Yes, you can use that upgrade_fh5_to_6.0.0_dl.exe download with the V5 and V6 licence details for as long as you like.

Just follow the how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details advice about creating an Installation Archive.

Contrary to what the original Email says, you should NOT delete the download, but keep it with the licence details for future use, when re-installation is required for any number of reasons, such as moving from PC to PC, or following a PC failure and rebuild.

BTW: I am surprised you did not know the name of the download file as in my Emails from Calico Pie they specify the filename.
Unfortunately, the Email also says:
(5) After the upgrade has completed, you no longer need the file you downloaded. You may keep a single backup copy of it, however, and you are recommended to do so, in case you need to reinstall Family Historian, and re-apply the upgrade, in the future.
So the first sentence suggests you can delete the download, and many users do!!!
