Photo Face Recognition

Post by Gommers1 » 07 Jan 2016 10:16

Does anyone know of a face recognition software for family historians? Does FH V6 have this? I have, as most of us will have, lots of old photographs of ancestors who I cannot identify easily. If there is something out there it would be a huge help.

Congratulations on your first posting.

FH V6 certainly has no face recognition like that.

If you do a Google Search for Face Recognition or Face Detection you will see what is possible, but I don't think it does what you are expecting. It is NOT Face Identification where the software will magically tell you who the photos are, unless you can supply a photo of somebody you know, then the software may find matching faces.

BTW: Please click the User Control Panel link at top of this FHUG web page, and on its Profile tab enter your Family Historian Version so it appears to the right of your postings, and we know what you are using.

I would suggest the free Google Picasa which is very good for many tasks with photographs including face recognition.

Yes, I was going to suggest Google Picasa but it only does face detection not face identification.

In other words if you don't have a photo of somebody whose name you known, it won't identify the name belonging to a face.

But, in my experience, Picasa is remarkably good at spotting family likenesses, even a couple of generations apart. However, for image manipulation I much prefer the also-free IrfanView.

Thanks for all the replys. I had googled before posting and Picasa came up. I will give it a try. Just thought I would throw the question out in case anyone came up with anything else. Invariably one knows at least one person in the photo, then it becomes detective work for the others.
