If the place is already in your Places list (i.e. there is a Place Record with that place name) it will still remain there even if you delete all instances of its use. You can delete the Place Record manually, but if you think you might want to refer to it again it does no harm to leave it there.

Thanks, but I can see two problems with that: first, I sometimes like to do a bit of tidying and clear out things with no obvious links; and second, assuming I managed to resist that temptation, I'd have lost the ability to select the place and run a "Where used" type of query.

I'm aware of the issues relating to primary and secondary sources, but it's not unknown for someone to be born before civil registration, and census or other later records to be inconsistent.

Regarding alternative Place names, they can be recorded in the Notes of the main Place record.

I hesitate with this because it still loses the functionality of an entry in the Places list, as I mentioned in my reply to Lorna.
