Couples with no children

Is there a way to record that a couple had no children, when this is definitively known?

Indeed, is there a way to record ANY given child count, even if one is not intending to individually record all of the children in the tree? That would be useful for remoter twigs -- I am not much interested in recording the details of a 7th cousin 8 times removed of a 9x-great-grandfather's second wife's third cousin....

Peter,

One way to do this is to use the All tab to go to the Spouse family, right click and select Add Miscellaneous, and select Add Count of Children, and set this to 0 or whatever count you wish.

....and, if you set the child count to 0, on diagrams a thick black line will be drawn under the couples boxes so that you can immediately see that there are no children to search for.

One snag with that method is the Count of Children field is hidden away in the Family record and awkward to find, view & update, and is missing from most, if not all, Reports.

Whereas, the Child Count fact is available via the Add Fact button of the Individual Property Box and appears on the Facts tab and in Reports.
Conventionally, it is usually added to the Female Spouse, but can be added to either or both, and to spinsters and bachelors.
It has the same effect on the No-offspring marker black line in Diagrams.

That second method sounds preferable, Mike. Presumably, though, it could only be used when a woman had no children from ANY relationship? It wouldn't work, for example, if a woman had children by her first marriage but not by her second?

Yes, that is correct Peter, so you would have to use one of the other options, either a Child Count: 0 fact for her husband, or if he also had Children by any relationship, then the Family ~ Count of Children: 0.

There's a Detail tab on the individual's property box that when enabled allows various obscure fields to be completed, e.g. numbers of children, numbers of marriages, nicknames, also known as, etc. I can't remember offhand how to enable it - I'm sure someone will come along soon who can, but I find it a very, very, useful tab to have available.

Yes, that is the FH V3 legacy Details tab.

It can be enabled via the Property Box > Menu cog > Customize Data Entry > Version 3 Compatibility button.

Alternatively, that Customize Data Entry option can add selected fields to a tab of your choice, including Main tab.

However, that still does not (and cannot) show the Family ~ Count of Children field.
