Standardising Place Names

Post by JKC » 24 Dec 2015 09:48

As a newcomer I have just loaded my GEDCOM into FH6. The tree has been built-up over 30 years and contains 17000 names. Pleased that I had no problems in getting all my data into FH including a large number of notes and images.

I find that I have used many different versions of place names over the years. I would like to tidy this up by specifying a standard name for each place and then replacing all the different versions with the standard.

I think that manually changing each record would take far too much time and be prone to error. I wonder if there is a semi-automatic or automatic way to help with this task? I realise I would have to manually go through the list of places to define which are the variants of a particular standard.

Use Tools>Work with data>Places. Select two or more places from the list and then use the Merge option. You will be asked to choose one as the name for the final merged version.
