Standard "in" text for Places
Is there any way I can change the automatic insertion of "in" before a Place name in narratives? Ideally, I would like to change it to "at" by default; but removing it altogether would also be an acceptable option as I don't mind changing all the sentences which use it.
(Due to the problems with Place and Address, I no longer use address at all, because it does not support geo-coding or images.)

I believe in each fact sentence you could change {place} to at {_place}.
You change each sentence by going to Tools > Fact Types... Then select the fact you wish to change and click on Edit... Then modify the Sentence Template.

It sounds like you have upgraded to FH V6, so please click the User Control Panel link at top of this web page, and in its Profile tab update your Family Historian Version so it appears on the right of your postings.
Bill is essentially correct, but < at {_place}> is even better. The reason is that if the Place field is empty, then Bill's version would always display the 'at' on its own, whereas the <bracket> version hides the 'at' if Place is empty.
The narrative sentence Template features are covered in Tools > Fact Types > Edit click Help and then investigate the Template Codes link.
BTW: I would be surprised if the FH geocoding recognises many Addresses as it currently only recognises place names, and in some countries does not even do that very well. The Map Life Facts plugin uses the Google geocoder and handles both Address and Place fields very well.
I agree that adding pictures of a specific Address is more of a problem, but can be done via Source Media or Fact Media.

Many thanks for both replies. I have now changed all Fact sentences, and reports are much better.
Mike - thanks for the tip about using "Map Life Facts" - I was invoking Google or Bing maps in a separate window to get accurate geo-codes, which was messy, so I'll try the plug-in in future.

The Plugin allows the geo-coded Lat/Long to be automatically saved in the FH Place record if you choose the appropriate Options.

Re: Standard "in" text for Places
Thanks - I used the option to preserve all the existing "defined" codes, then used the plug-in to clean up the rest. My codes are now 100% up to date.
BTW, for finding and using codes for old places, (at least in Scotland) have you ever used the NLS website ? It has a huge range of old maps, which use modern overlays, and enables you to pin-point long-gone streets, farms and villages. It's an amazing resource, and well worth a look.

Re: Standard "in" text for Places
Thanks very much for this reminder! One of my back-burner projects involves a street in Glasgow which has been renamed since the time period of the records I'm using (early 20th-century Valuation Rolls). It will be much easier to make sense of the data I've already collected with a map of the right period.akd wrote:BTW, for finding and using codes for old places, (at least in Scotland) have you ever used the NLS website ?
