Website creation not reproducible

Post by smoothster » 06 Dec 2015 18:06

I am tearing my hair with the Create a Website facility in FH6.
Is there any way to interrogate a website to find out what settings were used to create it?

I created a pilot site which shows the family of the couple at the top of the tree with a list of their children all nicely hyperlinked to their own families and so on yea unto the tenth generation.

A second entry on the index page links to descendants by generation again all hyperlinked in a narrative style.

The trouble is I can’t recreate it! The website folder contains family pages and individual pages for everyone; they're just not hyperlinked to each other.

I want to add some extra pages at the top of the index page and also correct some errors, so I need to be able to be able to repeat the process.

What am I missing? The .css and .js files are identical.

No, you cannot interrogate a website to find the FH settings.

BUT, when Publish > Create a Website gets through all the Steps and Finish is used, then all the settings are automatically saved for that Project.

So repeating Publish > Create a Website should use the same settings as before by default.

To add extra Individuals to Index of Names use the Step 2 - Select Featured Individuals.
To add extra items to the Home page, use Step 4 - Add Items for Table of Contents.

See how_to:make_family_tree|> Make a Family Tree CD/DVD or Website for more advice.

The .css and .js files will probably be the same as they only defined general styles and functions.

The fam#.html and ind#.html files are hyperlinked to each other and from the _nameindex.html file. Have you actually opened them in a browser? What happens?

Thanks Tatewise,
I think I've cracked it - I have to create the nameindex first then move on to family pages and descendants by generation. That seems to give consistent results.

I don't understand what you are doing, unless you mean you are using Step 2 - Select Featured Individuals to select the people to include in the web site, which not only defines the hyperlinks in the Name Index (_nameindex.html) but also all the inter-linked Family pages (fam#.html), etc.

Yes, that's what I'm doing.
