Re: restoring settings
I think I'm missing something here again; I've copied the FH6 project from the old pc to the portable drive but can't find a way to copy it to the 'Documents' FH6 project folder without it stating 'back up' and also showing a drive letter?
In the projects folder when I try to import it to the FH6 prog, it only shows the sample project which is already on the programme?
See attached screen shot of portable drive.

Re: restoring settings
The main problem John is that you are NOT following the instruction again, and therefore making life difficult for yourself.
How many times must I repeat:
"Copy the entire Family Historian Projects folder to your external drive from old PC."
That is the folder with the name Family Historian Projects that sits within your Documents folder.
That Family Historian Projects folder is NOT shown on your TOSHIBA Ext J: drive and so the instructions won't work.
DO NOT COPY the Rosser 030714 project folder.
DO NOT IMPORT anything using FH V6.
On the new PC, with that Family Historian Projects folder on the TOSHIBA Ext J: drive, all you do is drag that one folder to your Documents folder shown on the left under Libraries.
You may get a message asking if you wish to Replace certain files.
Just select the Replace option, and tick the option to do the same with all the rest.

Re: restoring settings
I think I may be slowly getting there! I've now got my project on FH6 and media and photos are showing.
However, there is a problem with this bit:
7) Run the Plugin Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings on the new PC and in the Options tab tick Allow Restore Registry Data, then use RESTORE to migrate all preferences and customisations from the folder containing the BACKUP created above.
When I try to do this it says I've no back up settings?
Should I start again or can I back up separately and put them somewhere?

Re: restoring settings
Does the Plugin say where it is looking for the backup settings?
Did you perform step 3) Run this Plugin on the old PC and use its BACKUP option?
If not, then you can run it now, but note the Backup Data: folder it uses.
That folder must be copied from old PC to new PC and located when you run the Plugin RESTORE option.

Re: restoring settings
I don't think I'm backing up correctly. When I try to restore to new pc, I copy it from J to my docs, fh projects and within there 'back up.'
The Restore then asks what I want to restore?
See attached screenshot of restore questions, also 3 folders in Docs, like an orange showing 1 to 3.
Think I'm slowly going mad and trying to take you with me, my excuse sleepless nights worrying about it.
3rd attachment follows.

Re: restoring settings
John, that all looks perfectly OK.
Within that Plugin dialog window with pink WARNING and three green buttons and one red button:
Click the Program Data Files button.
Click the Tutorial Files button.
Click the Registry Data Keys button.
In the Close Program dialog, click OK - Quit Plugin button.
Close the Family Historian program - this is important.
In the new black window click the Y key on your keyboard and then press Enter key.
That should have completed the migration - well done.

Re: restoring settings
Thank you very much, Mike for your patience and perseverance with this 'old codger'-I was very frightened that I'd completely mess up the program and my research.
I think if I have to get another pc in years to come, it might be simpler to move the hard drive!
