We can use two solidi to mark surnames with multiple elements e.g. Lise /Van der Kip/, so that they appear correctly in reports, alphabetised lists etc.

Is there any way to invisibly mark double-barrelled, unhyphenated first names? I have a couple of "Anne Marie"s and "Anna Marie"s in my tree, they were known as such, but the reports always reduce their names to the first half, i.e. Anne/Anna.

Have you tried setting Given Name Used to "Anne Marie" or "Anna Marie" (without the quote marks)?

Can you please be more specific. Which Reports and where-about in them?

If you are only talking about Narrative Report headings, then in Report > Options on the Format tab, under Heading, select Record, and Edit the Heading Text to %INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL% (=LifeDates2()) i.e. append _FULL to ADORNED which is identical to the similar setting in Individual Summary Reports.

Yes. That sort of works, but it is reported as "Anne Marie SURNAME (known as 'Anne Marie')". I can live with that if need be. It's a little annoying though, partially because of the duplication, but also because it implies she had a first and middle name and always used both, when in fact her first name was Anne_Marie and she had no middle name.

A 'single name in two parts' also exists with some Spanish given names, for example, such as the boys' names José Maria or Juan Carlos. That made me think there might be a specific way to handle such instances.

If there were a solution, it would also be useful for a couple of instances were I have entered the name for an otherwise unknown infant as "An unbapt. child /SURNAME/" (since that is what was recorded on their burial record). Unfortunately that currently gets rendered as "An unbapt. child COLLIER. An was buried on 10 December 1640 in Cirencester" (my emphasis).

At the moment I am doing battle with an Ancestors By Generation narrative report, and specifically where other children of an ancestor are listed after their parents, such as:

Mother_Name MAIDEN_NAME, daughter of [...]. She and Father_Name SURNAME had the following children:

Child_Name SURNAME (YYYY-YYYY). Child_Name was born...

After a little experimentation, the simplest solution is to replace the normal space character between first names, with a No-Break Space.

However, the No-Break Space U+00A0 can be entered using Alt-0160.

In fact, I didn't realize I had that problem until you brought it up. Many of my French-Canadian forbears have similarly double-barreled first names — Jean Baptiste, François Xavier, Marie Reine, and the like.

And Mike, thanks for solving the problem I didn't know I had, before I knew I had it.
