pc renewal
I am about to buy a new pc, how do I keep my FH6 program and my tree intact during the transfer?

Re: pc renewal
The problem is that once I set up the new pc, the old one will be disconnected prior to installing the new one. My current version of FH is 6.04, I keep the latest project on a portable hard drive. Can I transfer the program to the portable hard drive and then upload it and the project on to the new pc?

Re: pc renewal
I would strongly advise that if at all possible you run both PC simultaneously, albeit for a few hours, until the migration is satisfactory, just in case you forget to transfer something important.
If that really is absolutely impossible, then I can suggest a variation of the Migration Guide steps, using your portable drive, but that is riskier.

Hello Mike,
I've not got the facilities to run both pcs so perhaps I could take a chance with the riskier migration guide?

Re: pc renewal
OK, so these are the modified steps:
- Ensure you have the installation media (download or CD) and licence details for FH V6.
If it is an Upgrade from FH V4 or V5 then ensure you have the licence details for that previous version too.
Without all required licence details you will not be able to install the Upgrade to FH V6 on your new PC.
If you installed from a download then copy that .exe file to your portable hard drive, and copy the E-mailed licence details for V6 and V4/V5 as necessary.
See how_to:reinstall_family_historian|> Family Historian Installation Advice,
and how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details.
Make sure you install the same Latest Free V6.0.4 Upgrade on both PC. I suggest you put the download on portable hard drive and install from there on both PC. - Perform all the steps in the V6 & Standard Migration Guide for the old PC and both PC, noting any details that must be compared with new PC later, and copying FH Projects to portable hard drive.
- Decommission old PC and commission new PC.
- Perform all the steps in the V6 & Standard Migration Guide for the new PC and both PC comparing details noted above.
