Rootsweb FHU Mailing List problems

Post by jimlad68 » 31 Oct 2015 10:31

I don't think this has been mentioned already, and might affect people unknowingly, but this notice from Simon Orde is on the Rootsweb forum:

Subject: [FHU] *** Admin: more list problems. Please read...

Hello everyone. The list seems to have sailed into stormy waters in the last few days. We have had a spate of garbage emails with dodgy links that you shouldn't click on (the "Fw: new message" ones). And now we have had another problem which may be a side-effect of the first (not sure yet): a large number of users have been automatically unsubscribed by RootsWeb (the people who manage this Mailing List). We are investigating why this has happened and the quickest way to rectify it. So please bear with us.

Unfortunately of course anyone who has been unsubscribed (unless they immediately re-subscribed) will not get this message. However, if you know anyone who is wondering what is happening, do pass this information on to them. As I say, we are working on it, and hope to re-subscribe everyone who was automatically unsubscribed in this way.

For future reference, if you do get unsubscribed unexpectedly and you did not want to unsubscribe, please just re-subscribe. This automatic unsubcribing probably has happened because your email provider has blocked messages from Rootsweb. If so, the problem is likely to correct itself, but it may take a day or two. If you continue to be unsubscribed automatically, please just wait a day or so and then try again.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Simon Orde

Just a quick update -- Simon did say that there had been a problem with people getting un-subscribed from the list.

I had been getting the list in Digest form, but to better cope with the spamming, I have switched to getting the messages in the ordinary list form. This allows me to delete the offending messages, but to keep the good ones -- and makes replying to messages a lot easier.

If a re-subscribe command doesn't work, we can still read the list (what's left of it) via the RootsWeb archiver. Kudos to Simon for his efforts in dealing with this mess.
