Import Microsoft Word

FH6

I have created a page in Microsoft Word showing a picture of a family crest and description of the family origin. Is it possible to import this into F.H. to replace the default Title Page when making a book, and/or DVD.
Thank you.

The short answer is no.
FH does not import Word documents at all. It only supports links to them so they can be opened in Word.

If you want that detail in Books, Reports, DVD, etc, then add the image of the family crest and the words directly into FH. However, they will probably need to be added in different places depending on exactly where you want them to appear.

I am not sure what you mean by the default Title Page in a Book or DVD.
I don't think a Book has a default Title Page.
Family Tree DVD have a Home page with an optional picture image and optional welcome text.

Thanks for your reply. When I said default Title page I meant the title page as it is when moving it from left to right, I had hoped that it might be possible to import from Microsoft Word into this title page. So now the simple answer is to omit the title page, print the book, and add the title document after printing. I presume this is not possible when making a DVD.

Whilst on this subject, may I ask another question? I would like to make a simple DVD to see how it looks on a TV. I propose to do this by simply using a series of Family Groups only. However, I find that the option of moving family groups across is not available for a DVD as it is for a book. Can you please tell me why this is?

Thank you.

Books
Sorry, I do now see what you mean by Title Page in a Book, but its format is inflexible.

I did not realise you were talking about a printed Book where it is easy to subsititute printed pages.

Many users create a PDF version of their Book and distribute it electronically via Email attachment, Cloud storgae, or on a DVD. In this case, a possible solution is to insert a Blank Page (placeholder) where the extra page is required in the Book (so the Table of Contents page number is correct), save the Word document in PDF and use a PDF merge tool to combine the two PDF components.

DVD
You cannot expect a TV to handle files on a DVD in the same way as a PC.
For example, if you copied a Microsoft Word document onto a DVD, would you expect to be able to view & edit that document on your DVD player and TV?
The same applies to most other files copied form a PC onto a DVD.

I am still not clear whether you are talking about creating Family Group Sheet reports in PDF and copying those files to the DVD, or trying to use the Publish > Make a Family Tree CD/DVD. In the latter case at Step2 you can select the Individuals, and at Step3 the Family Group Sheet reports for those people. BUT the Make a Family Tree CD/DVD command produces HTML web pages that can only be opened by a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox or Chrome and your DVD player and TV cannot handle those files.

The big message is that PC can handle PC files and TV videos on DVD, but DVD players/TV can only handle DVD videos, or with modern equipment, if you are lucky, maybe photo files such as JPG/PNG.

I'm sorry you misunderstood my meaning when I said that I would like to see the end product on TV. Of course I meant via a DVD Player and not directly through a TV.

As a relatively new user of F.H I find the terminology very difficult for a layman to follow. I thought that making a DVD was virtually the same process as making a book, the end product being to view it on TV (via a DVD player) instead of reading it. However, to make a book with the wizard, one moves items from one side of the window to the other ( one item being a family group ). When making a DVD the method is different as only all the individual names are available to be selected. As I said originally, I thought I could make a simple DVD using a series of Family Groups through each generation. I apologize for not explaining this in a more technical way but I hope that you can follow my meaning.

billygee

Sorry, billygee, you have misunderstood what Publish > Make a Family Tree CD/DVD produces.
Having invoked that command, click the Help button in Step 1 and it says:
The wizard that is used for creating a website is essentially the same wizard that is used for creating a CD/DVD.
So it is producing Internet style HTML web pages for a web browser, almost identical to the Publish > Create a Website command, and totally unrelated to Publish > Book.

If you progress through to the Finish of the wizard with minimal/default settings, you will be given the option to display the results in your browser. Probably best to use the Family Historian Sample Project for this exercise, and you will see what I mean. It produces clickable web pages that allow navigation around the family tree with one web page per family/individual.

I have some pdf and Word documents that I would like to incorporate into a DVD. They are like narrative reports but with several images built into them.

Is there any way I can incorporate a narrative report that was created outside of FH?

Sorry Irene, but "incorporate into a DVD" means nothing without more detail of what you are putting on the DVD, how you intend to use it, and what FH commands you are hoping to use.

Did you understand my previous reply about Make a Family Tree CD/DVD creating HTML for a browser just like Create a Website?
