Fact type for crime events

Post by philmcleod » 21 Sep 2015 10:00

Is there a suitable fact type available for use in recording criminal acts and similar events, or can someone give advise on creating a suitable custom fact type. I have an ancestor that appeared in court and wish to record the details.

Thanks

There is no Standard Fact for criminal events, so what Custom Fact Type to create needs a little thought, and you should try and make it as non-specific and general purpose as possible.
There are some ideas in Trying to build my first Event/Attribute (9041) and Court Cases (5585).

So perhaps a Litigation Event or Legal Event or Criminal Event or just Miscellaneous Event. It depends how many of your facts are likely to need to use the Custom Fact.

Use Tools > Fact Types > New to create the Fact Type and its default characteristics. Use the Help buttons for advice. Most of the settings can be modified later if necessary. The Sentence Template for Narrative Reports is only a default that can be customised on a Fact by Fact basis.

I simply created a Custom Event called Trial with the following Sentence Template:

Code: Select all

{individual} was on {label} <aged {date:Age_at}> {date} <at {address}> {place}.  {note}
The Note field can contain something like "Sentence: Imprisonment 1 month for concealing the birth of her infant".

Thanks. I have created a satisfactory COURT APPEARANCE fact similar to your suggestion with sentence template "{individual} had a {label} {date} {place} {age}. {note}" The Note field contains all the detail of the crime and punishment. Can then also be used for other reasons for being in court, such as a witness.
