FH version 5 One Name Study assistance

I am hoping to set up a one name website, using Family Historian version 5 as my database. As my FH knowledge is not that extensive I would like to find someone within an hours travel of Accrington, Lancashire who could give me some hands on training with my database, help spot any errors and make suggestions for improvements before releasing it to others.

Can anyone help?

Jim, could you please use User Control Panel > Profile at the top of this web page, and update Family Historian to Version 5 so it appears in the panel on the right of your posting. Then you won't need to tell us which version you are using.

Have you considered the GOONS fhugdownloads:contents:service_one-name_studies_guild|> Service ~ One-Name Studies Guild.

Do you have an understanding of what style of website you wish to create?
e.g. Are you planning to use the FH Publish > Create a Website feature, or alternatively to export your GEDCOM file to some online utility (Ancestry, FindMyPast, ZoomPast, The Next Generation)?

There are a couple of One Name Study FH Websites amongst the links:index|> Member Web Sites.

I know there are several One Name Study FHUG members, but have no idea where they live.

Hello Jim,

I have a One-Name Study built using FH6 (but previously FH5 - no significant differences) at http://www.firthworks.com/genealogy. Give or take, that's what a basic FH Create a Website looks like. If that isn't the style that you're hoping for, you'll need to investigate Mike's suggestions for exporting to some online utility.

Sorry, although I've lots of Accrington folk on my site, I'm nowadays too far away for hands-on assistance.

Thank you all for your advice. My computer knowledge is not good enough to set up and run my YOXALL one name website and my current aim is to put my FH database in good order then employ someone to set up and run the website for me.

Having looked at various websites suggested there aren't any that seem to cope with the data I have amassed. For example I have extracted all YOXALL, and many variations, on 1841 to 1911 census and can link approx. 95% to a living YOXALL descendant. Likewise with GRO BMDs I can link some 90% of all YOXALL on BMDs from 1837 to 1915, much of the shortfall largely due those who were born and died between census. All this data is on simple spreadsheets that can be sorted in many ways to help find individuals who are not yet linked to a YOXALL family. To add to this data I believe I have identified every YOXALL line from 1841 to date.

My problem is how to make all this data, and thousands of images, freely available to others. Ancestry Trees are very good and a godsend, but there are no statistics or family histories nor, for example, is it easy to save or print information. However, Ancestry Trees are the easiest to follow that I have come across so far. My interest is in fleshing out the dry and dusty BMDs that people gather by the thousand. But who were they, what did they do, where did they live, what did they achieve, etc? That is what surely matters.

I do have a good idea what I want and have designed a Home page with contents. It was my hope that by now I would come across a younger YOXALL researcher with the ability to set up and run the website, with me supplying all that is required. To this end I have registered the YOXALL surname with Guild of One Name Studies, GOONS, and if it is of interest you can see how my research has progressed by visiting the GOONS website http://one-name.org/ and searching with the YOXALL surname.

Thanks once again.

I think that your data in its current spreadsheet form will be difficult to turn into a website fleshed out the way you describe.

One possible route is to capture all your data in FH and use Narrative Reports to produce the web pages.
FH V6 has much improved Narrative Report features compared to FH V5.

To capture the data I recommend using the ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources free add-on.

You say "Having looked at various websites suggested there aren't any that seem to cope with the data I have amassed."
Can you give some more clues about what you were hoping for.

Usually, to flesh out the details, you need to enter the Facts into FH about "who were they, what did they do, where did they live, what did they achieve, etc" by using Occupation, Residence, Education, and often custom Facts to define those details and the Narrative Sentences that build to form the Narrative Reports.
