Help again

Post by billygee » 24 Aug 2015 11:05

When I launch FH v6 it defaults to one of my projects instead of the Projects Window. I tried to correct this by clicking on More Tasks in the Projects Window/ Project List/Set Location to Installation Default. This was obviously wrong as I have lost all my projects in the list except the Sample Project. How can I restore my list of projects, and open FH with the Projects Window?
Many thanks.

Presumably you had changed the File > Project Window setting for the Location of your Projects to somewhere other than the default Documents\Family Historian Projects folder.
You need to click on the blue link next to Location and use Choose Location... to browse to your new location of your FH Projects folder.

Having got your Family Historian Projects list back, the Project that starts by default will have a tick next to it.
Select that ticked Project, and either right-click it, or use More Tasks and remove the tick next to Default Project.

Now there is NO Default Project, so when FH starts it will display the Project Window.

Hi Mike,
Sorry but I am unable to find my projects in the way you suggest. I can however, open each project with
FILE/GEDCOM FILES. but when I select Save they still do not appear in my Project List. Can you please help further?

Hi Billygee,
I assume that your Projects did get listed in the File > Projects Window before the recent upset?

Open your main Project using File > Gedcom File Tasks as you described.
Then use File > File Statistics and highlight the File Name: listed above the Record Counts.
Copy & Paste that full File Name: into this thread.

Then I can explain what to do next.

Hi Billygee, that is NOT good.
How did your Projects end up there?

You should NEVER EVER create folders or files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ nor C:\Program Files\ folders!
Those folders are specially reserved by Microsoft Windows for installed program app files only.
This is going to take great care to unravel.

What you need to do is use Windows Explorer to move all the Project folders from C:\Program Files (x86)\ to the default C:\Users\{your-name}\Documents\Family Historian Projects\ folder.
i.e.
Move C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\grice tree\
to C:\Users\{your-name}\Documents\Family Historian Projects\grice tree\

Repeat this move for each Project folder you have created in C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\.

BUT take great care NOT to move any of the installation folders: Books, Diagrams, Fact Types, Flags, Program, Property Box, Queries, Reports, Samples, Text Schemes, Web, etc, otherwise you will corrupt the FH V6 program!!!

Will try, but I have no idea how this has happened. I don't suppose your excellent help extends to 'hands on' via TeamViewer does it? PLEASE!!!

That should have moved all your Projects to the FH default location.

There was already a pair of Projects there, so they now have a numeric suffix.

I hope that all the Project data is now OK?

Thank you so much Mike, I could never have done that without your help. I can't understand how all that happened as all my projects were imported via Gedcom files.

Have a drink on me! Cant thank you enough,

Bill.

OK, no problem.
Just check things over, and make some backups using File > Backup/Restore.
I have to go out now, but if you discover anything wrong we can sort it tomorrow.

Re: Help again

Further to yesterday's help, there are now three issues to resolve.
1. In the Project Window there are now two FH sample projects, and two GEE Tree projects. To tidy this up, can I safely delete one of each?
2. In the Gee Project most of the photos are missing of one large family of parents and 13 grown up siblings. These I originally linked to one group family photo. At the moment, there is a blank square where the photo of each individual should be. If they can't be recovered easily, I can re-do them, but if so, how can I remove the blank photo squares first?
3. Still in the Gee Project. In the Focus Window I have a family of 11 children. At the side of each child is a magnifying glass symbol except for one Lucy GEE. at the side of her name is a blue arrow pointing down. To access anyone else's details their relationship to Lucy is always shown. If I access Lucy's details, she is shown as a Root Person which she is not. When launching the Gee Project from the Project Window Lucy GEE's details are shown first. How do I rectify this?

Hope you are still able to help,
Bill

Yes, I suspected there may need to be a little tidying up.
  1. You can use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Delete Project to remove a Project, but you must select the Project to be removed before clicking the More Tasks button, otherwise the option is greyed out.
Either or both FH Sample Project can safely be deleted, especially as it can be recreated using More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project as explained in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.
Hold fire on the Gee Tree Project just in case the missing photo is there.
  2. Almost certainly, the only problem is the missing group family photo. If that can be reinstated, I suspect the 'blanks' will fix themselves.
Click on the camera Media icon in the main toolbar and View All Media, hopefully there will be only one 'blank X' missing photo.
Double-click that 'blank X' and the expected File: name and Location: path for the photo will be shown in red.
Click on the red File not found link and FH will offer options to find the photo.
Either browse for it yourself or let FH search for it. Let me know the results as it may need a little more action.
  3. Lucy GEE has at some point been chosen (by you) as the File Root. If you navigate up through her Ancestors you will see that their Child that leads back to Lucy will have a blue arrow to allow you to navigate back down the descendants to Lucy. All relationships are shown with respect to the File Root.
Click on the F1 keyboard button to open a Help page that explains all about the Focus Window. (F1 works for most other windows too.)
To choose a different person as File Root, then right-click their name in the Focus Window and choose Make File Root. Then all the blue arrows and relationships will now refer to that new File Root.

Hi Mike,
All photos retrieved OK, so I will now delete the Gee 2 project in the Project Window.
I have found that the Root problem was an error in the Gedcom file when I first imported it into FH, so I can easily rectify that.
So hopefully it's 'All Systems Go' again, and once more I can't thank you enough for your perseverance and help to a newcomer to FH. I hope I can call on your help again if needed as I delve further into the complexities of FH.
Kind Regards,
Bill.

Hi Bill,
One more check is worthwhile.
In each Project, use Tools > External File Links and check the File Links pane.
Every file should be listed within Project Data Folder - Media and there should be no 'blank X' icons.

If any files are listed under the C: drive, then sooner or later when you need to migrate to a new PC, they will cause problems.
See how_to:changing_external_file_links|> Changing External File Links for ideas.

Any broken link 'blank X' icons need to be fixed, similar to your missing family group photo.

If you need further help with this, let me know.

Checked external file links for Grice and Gee Projects and all OK no blank X boxes. However, with the Beardmore Project the file link pane was completely blank. What does this mean?

Presumably the Beardmore Project has no Media photo image files linked to it.
